I been feeling like shit everyday...
    #14351863 - 04/25/11 09:29 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

My parents are no longer making money (they were forced to go out of business), and they will soon no longer be able to pay for the house mortgage. As for me, not only have I dropped out of my 2nd semester of my first year at college, but I also work at a minimum part-time paying job at a smoothie stand in the mall.

Ever since they gave up their business (and they have no money to start another one), all my mom does at night is drink and cry all night, and I really can't do anything about it because I'm just one of those children who feel it's very awkward to comfort their own parents for some weird reason (I really don't know why I don't even try to help her, although I try to leave her alone so she doesn't deal with any more stress than she already has to deal with.) My dad, not really the emotional type, tries to cope with the stress by pretending like everything's fine and whatnot...

As for me, I have a bigger problem to face now, since I am soon probably going to move out and make a living on my own. With barely any college education and a low paying job, how am I supposed to continue living a decent life? Honestly, I was never going to talk about this dilemma since it was very personal and not something to share with, but it has come to the point where I really don't know what I'm going to deal with in the near future. This really :feelsbadman: :frown:

sacrifies will have to be made man.. at that low of income your going to have to get roomates.. and start from there.

ask your boss for a raise.

talk to you pops (outside of the house) and get a feel on what his strategy is.

Yeah I wouldn't mind sharing an apartment or whatever with roommates, unless they're over the age of 25. Some dude told me to check craigslist.com for that.

Unfortunately, I can't ask my boss for a raise since it's up to the company, not him, and the company would definitely not let that happen, so I'm thinking whether or not I should just find a better paying job.

And as for talking with my dad, that's a very good idea. Thanks man for the help, much appreciated

i dont presume to know you or your parents but im guessing no one handed them a business. Im sure they worked hard and long and it took a while to make that happen themselves...but they did it. Theres proof right there that you can too.

the penny saver and your local newspaper will have people looking for roomates.

just meet with them in a mutual location and drill the hell out of them and find something you like.

you should always have at least a half assed job search going on the side for better cash.

I'm sorry to hear about you and your family's troubles man. My advice, STAY IN SCHOOL. I'm 26, I wish to HELL I'd gone to college. Now I'm trying to go back, but I would have already HAD a degree years ago if I had just stayed in.

You should have stuck it out in college, since there aint that many options you can go get training to run a forklift and work in a warehouse, you will make enough to live decent long as you aint plannin on havin any kids. That or you can be a hard ass and take up a manual labour job and if you work hard enough at that show up on time and all that your employeer will usually pay to train you further so you can make bank and not have to bust your ass. as much.

Yeah I've done all that, forklift jobs, warehouse jobs, warehouse loading/delivery, manual labor. It mostly sucks ass and doesn't pay enough.

Naw don't be sorry dude, it's all good lol but yeah..I'm thinking if I should, since I know I'll definitely regret it later on, but like..I can't even afford it and friggin financial aid declined me twice already :frown: Hope everything will go your way though, you don't deserve this :frown:

lol I still got time to think about whether or not to stay in college, but I think I will stay since there's only blue collar jobs available if I don't have any kind of degree. But like nowadays, even when people are graduating from Harvard/Cornell or other Ivy League universities, I heard they're getting nowhere in life due to the economy and whatever. Is that true? I don't want to bust my ass in college if I'm going to end up in the same place I will end up if I don't go to college..

That is sooo true LOL I immediately thought of my Psych 101 professor as soon as I read that lol but yeah most definitely I will put my 100% into my education. I took it lightly at first because of everything going around in the world, but I guess it's time to take a step up to happiness by going to school

youll get an idea of who they are and what they are about in a good 30 minute conversation.

Totally legal, but the idea is really only alluring because you want to bang them. Which would almost certainly be a bad idea, living condition-wise.

i've lived with two separate groups of women over the last few years, one was a house of 5 women and the other a house of three. i was the only male presence in both living situations. in my experience drama abounds when there is a high concentration of estrogen in one living space. watch out for the that.

and don't believe the myth about girls being cleaner than boys. most of the women i lived with were total slobs and left the kitchen and bathroom in shambles.

sorry to hear about the difficult times your parents have fallen upon. i know that this doesn't really change things, but what you and your family are going through right now is becoming more and more common across the american landscape. my family is in a similar situation.

this is a time of massive transition in the States (i'm assuming you're in the States) and many of the "old ways" of making a living in america no longer work. i've found the most difficult thing to deal with in america right now is a shift in perspective. we are used to living at a certain level and now that that level is becoming harder and harder to live at we don't know what to do with ourselves.

this in turn makes us feel "worthless". we are not worthless, we just need to reassess our priorities and shift our perspective from how things used to be to how things are.

i'll quit my preachin'. know that you're not alone in what you're feeling. i talk to many of my friends and they share similar sentiments.

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

Damn dude I hope everything goes well with you. Shit no one should be facing these kinda problems though because America should be doing something about the homeless and those who really need financial aid. I had to pay for tuition when I only could support myself and yet my college declined financial grant for me. But thanks for sharing your story and your consent, I won't use it to make me feel better, but to use it to learn from it. Thanks again

Its probably gonna be tough with such a low paying job, but its possible if you discipline yourself properly as far as finances go.  It kinda depends on where you live too.  Here in urban new england the average rent for a single bedroom apartment is over $1000/month.  usually like $1200/month.  But there are plenty out there between $500-$800/month which is much more reasonable for me.  But someplace like.. say kentucky would be much cheaper.  my brother rents a 3 bedroom house, with a nice kitchen, two car garage, 2 living rooms, a dining room, 2 full baths, and its on 4 acres of land.. he pays just over $500/month for rent.  So location is a huge factor.  In your case renting a single room would be a much more feasible option, if you don't mind sharing a kitchen, living room and bathroom.

I was looking into renting a room before though.  I was also thinking I'd have to take a low paying job ($10-$12/hr) doing anything I could get hired for.  I had an uncharacteristic stroke of amazing luck and landed a perfect, easy, enjoyable job and I'm being groomed to replace my boss when he moves to open another business elsewhere, and I'm making 39,000/year to start, about 18.75/hr if you break it down.  But still its gonna be tough until I move up and take my bosses position where I'll have a big pay increase as well as benefits.

It just sucks because if I had gotten stuck with a low paying job theres almost no way I would have been able to afford to live on my own (even with a little help from my girlfriend's low paying job).  In my county you need to make at least $23-25/hr to be completely financially independent.  Most unskilled jobs around here start at $9/hr. skilled jobs around $12-15/hr.  A lot of my college graduate friends are making 15 with no opportunity for advancement.  So most young people start out in shared living arrangements with several roommates sharing the bills.

I got lucky as hell.  I already had all the skills necessary for my job, it pays great (compared to everything else I've ever done), it didn't require a college degree (although i do have an associates degree), and advancement is pretty much a guarantee as I'll be taking my boss's job within a year or so and hiring my own crew to work under me.  All those years of floundering in the mire have finally paid off and for the first time, I've begun a real career.

there are tons of jobs opening up lately,  you might get lucky too.. or at least find something that pays a few dollars an hour better than your current slaving does.

Wow DAMN! Lucky for you! haha it's good to hear that everything worked out for you, especially with the job that you already had the necessary skills for. That's amazing dude, that gives me hope that maybe I can find a career that I'm suitable for. Thanks for your time and consideration, and I hope everything only gets better from here on out for both you and me
