Nearly a decade after invasion, poppies thrive in Afghanistan
April 25, 2011 - canada.com

Nearly a decade into the war in Afghanistan, opium poppies are still the major crop for many farmers and a big source of income for the Taliban despite expensive efforts to stamp out cultivation.

"Opium requires less work, less water and makes more money," said Haji Matiullah, a farmer from Maywand district in the violent southern province of Kandahar, a fertile ground for both poppies and Taliban militants.

Afghanistan produces around 90% of the world's opium, most of which ends up as heroin on the streets of Western cities or supplies some of the one-million drug-addicted Afghans.

The violence only encourages more farmers to grow the crop, said Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Afghanistan country representative for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

"In a period of insecurity or conflict, poppy is the best crop to plant. If you're a farmer, you think: 'They (drug lords) come to my farm, provide seeds, loans, they'll come to my farm gate to pick up the harvest," he said.

Poppy cultivation shows precious few signs of dying out of its own accord.

Haha, no joke. I'd kill for some cooked legit cooked opium.

Oh, and of course the whole situation isn't slowing down. We've had the war on drugs in America alone for years now, and absolutely nothing has happened. Oh no, you bust one guy, there's thousands to take his place.

whenever these articles come up they rarely mention the fact that the Taliban were very efficiently eradicating poppies up until we invaded. After we invaded poppy cultivation skyrocketed.. imagine that

Then they come out with a superbowl ad that says if you smoke weed you're supporting the terrorists

All my weed is locally grown, so if I smoke it I am supporting local agriculture ^_^

We're all terrorists here, according to some people.

It was obvious right from the start of the quagmire in Afghanistan that opium/heroin production was going to skyrocket. How else would we pay for clandestine operations?
