Religions that you actually like.
    #14349727 - 04/25/11 03:36 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was raised by close-minded Christians, and when I became a hardcore atheist about two years ago, I decided that I disliked ALL religion (even though I didn't know much about religions that weren't Abrahamic.)

Nowadays I'm not an atheist and I enjoy a lot of Eastern religions. Buddhism, Hinduism, etc, are awesome to study and they can easily mesh with science.

What religions (or philosophies) do you enjoy studying and applying to your life?

:levitate:

Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism.

I think that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam can also mesh with science though.

I try to be open in my approach to all religions- Baha'i style, I guess.

I don't particularly like any religion as a form of organised group of faith. I do enjoy all religion though, but when taken into the context of a mythological story, eg. seeing the Bible as equivalent to Greek mythology or something. But to be honest, anything that isn't Scientology is ok in my books.

Taoism, Buddhism. Haven't looked into Hinduism at all.

I'm right on with buddhism except for what seems like one of the main foundations of it. The whole reincarnation thing. I don't care to speculate exactly what happens when I die, I just feel that I will be somewhere. Almost if this body is a machine that my soul or spirit is remote controlling for the time.

I don't know if I even beleive that. Who knows.

I do know that I like the philosophy, but the reincarnation thing I'm not sure about. I take nothing on faith. I question even the masters like they said to do.

"Don't blindly believe what I say. Don't believe me because others convince you of my words. Don't believe anything you see, read, or hear from others, whether of authority, religious teachers or texts. Don't rely on logic alone, nor speculation. Don't infer or be deceived by appearances."

I'm down with Taoism and Buddhism. I have studied them both for a few years now but I'm not sure if I would consider myself either. Like I said, I take nothing by faith. I only know what makes sense logically to me. I can accept ideas, but I won't make beliefs out of them.

Pretty much every religion has forms of it that I like and don't like.  Christianity has a lot more depth to it than what you get in your average Southern Baptist or Pentecostal church.  I enjoy learning some of the deep mysteries and profound theological ideas that lie within the tradition.  My understanding of Christianity has also been enriched by exploring Judaism and particularly the mysteries of the Kabbalah.  And lately, I've been on a quest to learn more about Islam.  I've been to a mosque before, and I find their form of prayer and worship to be particularly powerful.  I've also seen Qawalli performances(a form of Sufi devotional singing) and really enjoyed it.

I really like all world religions, but I'd say I like exploring the Abrahamic traditions more, simply because they get so dismissively bashed by supposedly open-minded hippies.

i would consider my metaphysical view to be loosely gnostic christian with elements of rosicrucianism, kabbalistic magick and eastern philosophy. i probably wouldn't ever proclaim myself to be aligned with any particular church or tradtion though. it's just the best way to describe how the world seems to work to me, and that opinion changes as i grow anyway.

i'm fascinated with the abrahamic faiths at a scholarly level. while i may not agree with everything they have to say, reading guys like augustine and thomas aquinas has undoubtedly enriched my understanding of the christian tradition. i would like to learn more about islam, especially suffism (and suffi poetry in particular) and the mystical side of judaism. the eastern traditions have a lot to offer as well.

i really just enjoy studying religion and mythology. i do find fundamentalist stuff difficult to take seriously on any level though, and unfortunately that leads me to holding prejudiced opinions against people who hold such views. even with scholarly christianity i have intellectual reservations about things like incarnation and the notion of god being separate from nature.

I absolutely agree with this.  I'm an Agnostic myself, but am deeply interested in all religions on an intellectual level.  I feel that religion is part of the universal human experience; It doesn't matter that I don't believe because the vast majority of the masses do, and to many of them it is the single most important facet of their existence.

I was raised as a very casual Lutheran, I still go on Holidays if I am home to make my mother happy.  It doesn't bother me at all, my disbelief isn't militant at all and I see no harm in accommodating her on something so small as that.

I've taken quite a few religious history courses during my college career, all as electives (I have a Geophysics degree!), but all with the intention of gaining a deeper understanding of the respective beliefs of their adherents, and early Christian history is one of my favorites.  There are whole other interpretations of symbolism that one doesn't realize until exposed to it, from the apostle Peter being the rock (Petros) of the early Church to the common "fish" symbol having arisen because it was easy for early Christians to trace with their feet in the dirt to identify with one another.

I also love religious architecture, of all kinds.  I've been to many of the most remarkable buildings of different faiths and am never without a sense of awe at the time and work poured into them.

I've considered myself a Taoist almost as soon as i hit the teen years though martial arts studies, but lost my way for quite a long time afterwards. Now I'm nearing 25 and after a few mushroom trips last year the Way naturally started applying itself again.

In the recent years though, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Krishna Consciousness have all intrigued me greatly.

None of them. However, I've known a lot of good individuals that where part of all different kinds of religions.
