good luck with that.

My recent strategy has been; every time I go to the store and buy something, toss in an extra 2 bucks for a roll of nickels out of the register. Should begin to add up pretty quick, and I wont miss 2 dollars at a time. Plus no weird looks at the bank/teller.

Nickels are still worth 5 cents. Just like a a pre 1982 penny is still worth a penny. But the amount of copper in that same penny is worth about 2 cents. So the risk is small. Take a look at coins containing silver, in general most coins before 1964. Those coins while still being legal currency at the face value, cannot be had for the face value now. The silver content in them makes them more valuable, than what the face says.

Well at the rate the price is increasing it may be quite a bit faster than that. 10 years ago I bought silver at about 7 bucks an ounce, today silver hit 49 bucks an ounce. I look at that, and then look at the charts for the price of copper over the last year and I have to think that it is a sound investment.

Only applies if I intend to melt the coins. Which I dont.

Also becomes irrelevent if the SHTF.

I think you just dont like my idea of investing in copper. Its ok, you dont have to like it.

Well if you want to invest in copper why not start collecting the 95% copper pennies. Not the zinc alloy ones...

I do that too. But you have to sort them. Only 1982 and prior pennies are good for that. Nickels on the other hand are currently in circulation. No sorting neccessary.

Dude I scrap copper all the time. Usually in wires, extension cords, electric motors. Copper is in all kinds of stuff and I can usually get $3/lb at the scrap yard. I'd recommend checking out garage sales with a magnet in hand. 10ยข for $4 worth of copper? Sounds like a deal to me!

The 1 oz copper us mint eagles are neat... not a great investment but you can get like 100 cheap and then have a stack of 'treasure' to fiddle with.

I guess it just entices me as I can't afford silver >.<

Magnet?  To make sure it's not copper coated steel?
