Then you must believe that there isn't an excessive lack of evidence in support of paranormal phenomenon.

I make the distinction because we're talking about an example of excessive optimism, and I just want to point out that, contrary to what Apollyphelion said, optimism in regards to paranormal matters is generally unhealthy.

Yeah true dat.

I did say "Remain realistic and be optimistic" this one idea, not two. So mentioning my optimism without my realism is definitely splitting hairs.

How can one be simultaneously optimistic and realistic about paranormal matters? It isn't realistic to be optimistic about such matters, you would have to be either one or the other (considering, again, the severe lack of evidence in support of such matters, and the wealth of evidence which suggests that those matters are bullshit). This would be like being realistic about gravity, yet optimistic that you can fly if you jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Just because it seems absurd to you, doesn't make it so for everyone. I also find it to be a great recipe for creativity. I think it is perfectly fine to know something isn't real yet think about all the what ifs.

It shit me up when I was younger. Really, really freaky.
When I think about it at night with the lights out I still manage to freak myself out sometimes. I imagine turning over in bed and seeing that slender, black-eyed face looking down at me.
Scared yet?

True, but that doesn't discount the fact that one cannot be both optimistic and realistic about paranormal matters--again, that is like being realistic about gravity, and optimistic about being able to fly if you jump off a tall structure. There is just as much evidence against being able to fly off of tall structures as there is against paranormal phenomenon, and there is just as much a lack of evidence which suggests that one can fly off of tall structures as there is a lack of evidence which suggests that paranormal phenomenon are real.

The problem with that is that it can lead to dangerous thinking (e.g. "What if I can fly if I jump off of the Golden Gate Bridge... ").

Then you are no longer being realistic, which is not what I am talking about.
