Trichocereus Circumference

I have an assortment of trichocerus cacti that are unfortunately coming up short in the girth department, 1-2 inches at most and I haven't clue why.
The common cause as I have heard is lack of sunlight, but these specimens are in full sun, and they're in the ground now, with large root systems over a year old.
It's in the 80's/90's here, water obviously doesn't like to stick around, so perhaps they're not receiving enough water to fatten up?
I lost a few to root rot last year, so I'm cautious and looking for advice here, what's you folks take?

So they are about a year old? In my experience, they grow thicker when they grow taller and older. So, they may need to get a several feet tall before they appreciably thicken - like plant stem, they thicken when they have to hold up more weight.
Thick cuttings usually grow thick, but seedlings need to be taller and older before they thicken.

A pic would help.
Root rot is from too much water, not enough drainage or airflow.

Apologies, my camera is on loan but I'll see about getting some pictures up as soon as possible.
The cacti are middle cuttings that rooted nearly 16 months ago and range from 6 to 15 inches in length.
The soil composition is roughly 40/50/10, That is; Perlite, Compost/Sand, Poo. It's very light and keeping in mind the arid temperatures, the reason I was suspecting a deficiency of water is because the soil is bone dry two inches down just a couple hours after watering.

Have they been in the ground for 12 months or have you just planted them? When you water does the soil soak up the water ? If not try a soil wetting agent. I would think even with your temps the soil should be at least damp for a couple of days after watering. My summer daytime temps can be 35-42 deg C and I water avery 2-3 days. This year at the start of summer I only watered twice a week but my plants started to suffer.I also regally treat all of my cacti with a seaweed solution (seasol) and fertilize through the growing season. BTW all of my cacti are in pots at the moment.
