I found a fairly large number of what I thought might be P. aucklandii in a pine forest today. They certainly look like the pics I've seen posted but I can't see any obvious blueing and I'm too scared to touch them in case the're poisonous - any ideas what I might be looking at?

Sorry I don't have a digital camera and my phone won't take good pics so can't post any visuals.

You can still touch them even if they are poisonous. Apparently it's also perfectly safe to taste a small amount of any mushroom as long as you don't swallow (wouldn't necessarily recommend it though).

Um, Canberra, do explain how exactly tasting a unknown mushroom would help to clearly identify it?

I didn't say anything about identification, I was just reassuring him that simply touching a poisonous mushroom isn't dangerous.

Finds from Neighbourhood Walk [Re: Method_Man] * 1
    #14336272 - 04/23/11 12:03 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Just thought I'd share a few pics from a neighbourhood walk I took today

Gymnopilus junonius

Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Psilocybe weraroa

All these next weraroa have been growing in an area exposed to the sun, seems to make them grow with brown caps instead of the regular pale blue

Pins

This one's cap was opening slightly

Pretty interesting seeing the variation in weraroa from a single patch!

Hahaha. Don't worry I'm very careful about what I put in my mouth.
And so disappointed because I thought I'd found a goldmine.

From reading Stamets, these have active subspecies in some areas. But the concept of G. junonius (spectabilis) probably covers a bunch of similar looking different species, some of which are active.

Also apparently have some compounds like those in kava, I suppose these are kind of sedative/tranquilisers, might combine well!

But also heard are extremely bitter/inedible. But for many people this may not be a major problem...

A friend of mine has definitely felt effects from them in New Zealand. He consumed them by way of a concentrated tea.

I noticed a lot around recently on some large tree stumps where they make spectacular growth. But have also seen something the same or similar  that seems to grow in fields or near plants where there are no stumps.
I did not notice any bluing with them but have not really looked at them much.

I went out yesterday and found a whole heap in a public park but didn't give them a second glance because I had no idea they might be active.

There will also be some very poisonous ones on stumps too eg Gallerina.
Probably some toxic lookalikes to Gymnopilus also?.. anyone?

Saw what I took to be Gallerina lately growing in a typical spot where goldtops should be. The tiny, real baby pins looked a lot like the smallest goldtop ones before you can see the white stem. The mature mushroom was quite small, reddish/rusty brown, pretty much same colour all over including gills and a small ring on the stem.

Hi guys went for a walk today and found these:

Pretty sure the two on the left are little weraroa, not sure about the two on the right. Thought they might be weraroa too, but they seem kinda dried out- they're a little yellowish. One was still connected to the ground but the other was lying nearby...what do you guys think? Quick reply would be appreciated!!

Hi all, more pics from a foray of sorts today

Psilocybe semilanceata

Psilocybe weraroa

This mushroom was barely poking above the surface of the ground. In the second photo I have removed the dirt to show the root/stem.

Weraroa virescens
