Do woodchips have to be pasteurized before using them to make an outdoor bed? SWIM had great success using manure straight out of the bag with no pasteurization, was wondering if maybe they could just get a bunch of manure colonized and lay it between 2 layers of woodchips outside. Also, is mulch the same thing as woodchips or not really?

just buy the nicest woodchips you can - take out any really nasty looking shit - but soak in hose water outdoors for a couple days ( do this with outdoor bulk qty's ) and then make and spread into beds with a good amount of quality organic soils - plants and moss chunks and grass islands work great too!!!!
it works extra good bringing the shit indoors in jars to pasturize the chips - by just simply boiling them in water in a pot on the stove till they sink
outdoors yoru strains have to be STRONG and overcome the molds and nasty shit EVERYWHERE outside anyways!!!!
Good luck man

I've always pasteurized or sterilized several pounds to spawn to outdoor beds, once you have a bit of spawn it'll easily overcome any nasties.

and thats totally cool man ive seen it done many ways with much success - i just only pasturize my indoor substrates cuz i found around here in my area the pasturized stuff gets nasty faster - - - -and i couldn't imagin all the work to boil a bunch of chips like that - Thats wicked dedication Nice
i just throw hardwood mixed chips in garbage cans and soak for like two days - works like a charm for azures
here is a quick pic of a azi bed one week after adding soil and freshly just soaked chips - - - -
Here is a pic one week later - damn buggers already had to be fed again i love woodlovers - they eat so aggresively and just seem to expand for eternity

not that much work, I treat it like bird seed or dowels, soak them for a while, bag them and drop them in the PC most of the time, RR has a tek on a 55 gallon drum system for sterilizing, if you have the space it's great. I've also seen a pasteurizer that uses water heater elements and thermostat in a plastic drum... a tool I'm considering building soon

I think mushroom and marijuana cultivators are some ingenious bastards, they have to develop most of their own equipment because the commercial stuff is way out of reach if not impossible to come by and often times too large for the scale of operation we use

NO they dont, a good soak and your golden.
mix it with the woodchips when you spawn your grainspawn to your prepped bed.
they can be, you just have to make sure your chips arent treated wood or cedar woods and its fine to use.
I would get your grain jars inoculated and once you have colonized grain spawn you should mix it to your soaked woodchips and cover with your manure and some soil. IMHO

do you still have to soak them for 2 days before you do this?

no - its a way to fully saturate the chips even better than soaking alone - the temps of boiling expand the wood to really soak up ALL that they can Just boil chips in a big chili pot on the stove till they sink Drain and let cool to room temp then load up some jars
easy as can be GOODLUCK
