I used to LOVE techno before it hit mainstream. I mean i still enjoy it when I'm high or intoxicated, but seriously people are taking this rave scene too seriously and jumping onto the bandwagon like flies on shit. What's your guys' views on it? Is it happening around your area too?

I think that ones interests should remain independent of popular trend, regardless of either the positive or negative influence.

Well, were you hip to in the late 1980's? If you mean you used to love it before it hit mainstream, and that time period is anytime after the mid 1990's then you are just as guilty of what you complain of

QFT
Electronica didn't hit the mainstream till the late 90s. I remember being annoyed when it suddenly burst into popularity and MTV was making it all douchey.
It was a good thing for the artists who invented the genre, but it's become so watered down so fast it's actually kind of painful. Lot's of copycats trying to make money off the trend, and that's making it boring to listen to.
I still really dig the greats, Nigo, Technicolor, Daft Punk etc, and there are some newcomers that are really legit and quite good. Right now though, there is a lot of junk out there being hailed as "genius", when it's really pretty 'meh'.
This is what happens to every kind of music though. A group of people invent it as a local cultural phenomena, then it begins to gain popularity. Eventually it gets mass marketed, and everyone is trying to cash in on the aesthetic.

Yeah I pretty much agree with that if you mean electronica in general. So much pretty melodious technical wankery that gets called IDM these days. Having said that amon tobins latest is my favourite yet was pleased to see that. Gonjasufi is great recent stuff too.

Here's the first thing I found searching IDM on youtube, this is what 90% of idm sounds like these days IMO.

Who is "people"? There are plenty of places in the world where electronic music of any sort is nearly unheard of.

I think the people he's talking about is pretty obvious. Odds are, if you are on this web-forum, you live in an area where Electronica is part of the mainstream.
If you live in an area where the top 40 station plays Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, or even MGMT, you've been exposed to "techno" in the mainstream.

She is the #1 best selling Electronica artist according to Billboard. Her stuff is in tons of DJ sets. Which is why she is so popular.

Soo? I don't see anything particularly 'melodius' or technical about it

I don't hear much "techno" in America... seems like its more of a European thing along with raves. Here in the states (at least where I'm from, Atlanta) dubstep has recently exploded. Now, I love candyflipping to a nice dubstep rave or show as much as the next guy, but a lot of it is just no talent hacks with a MIDI sampler and ProTools. That said, I'm not much of an electronic music fan in the first place. "Live music" shouldn't be some tool messing around on a laptop. That being said Bassnectar was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to...

Well idk what it is exactly I just threw out the first recording software I could think of because I'm not tech savy. But its just some dude messing around on a laptop, using beat matching, pitch correction, etc...
