Unidentified Contamination
    #14344485 - 04/24/11 05:17 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I wish I'd taken pictures of the stuff, but I'll do my best to describe it.

I inoculated a number of jars about a month ago, and very quickly noticed that they'd become contaminated with a black gooey-looking mold. (I assume it's a mold -- what else would it be?) I also noticed, however, that the mycelium continued to grow despite the mold. I figured the jars were toast, and tucked them away and basically forgot about them until about a week ago, when I noticed that the black mold had receded and the white mycelium had taken over.

I didn't birth the cakes right away, as I'd been neglecting them for so long, anyway. I tucked them away yet again and when I returned a few days ago, there were massive pins that had sprouted in every single jar -- some of which had actually twisted themselves around the entire circumference. I birthed them, picked off all of the pins (probably about 2 grams dried), and now I'm wondering what to do.

First off, are the pins that I picked safe for consumption? Second, how do I know that any fruit from these cakes will be safe? One or two of the cakes still have a bit of blackness in them, but are pure white otherwise. These cakes seemed a little lighter than they should have when I birthed them, and even after the 12hr dunk, they seemed a little meager.

Again, I wish I'd taken pictures of the jars. I thought once a contamination had happened, the mycelium just wouldn't grow...

I was going to conclude this post with a statement about the white mycelium beating out the black contamination, but it sounded a little too.. er... racey?

So you are asking us to tell you whether or not we think you can eat it, based on your description?
If you could describe it accurately, you wouldn't need to ask because you would know.

But in general, moldy food gets tossed.

Yeaah, buddy...

He does have a point, though; my description could be a little more precise.

It was a black, gooey contamination that stuck to the glass of the jar like a slimy child pushing his face into a candy store window. It did not appear fibrous, and did not branch out like mycelium sometimes does. The mushrooms that grew appeared completely normal and there was no sign of the black mold on any of them.

I'd really appreciate a less girly response, preferably from someone who's graduated high school.

Eat them, that's my manly advice from one manly man to another manly man.
Black mold never hurt anybody with a penis. Not a big penis anyway. You DO have a big penis I hope?

Yeah, damn shemales!

Really, though, no hard feelings to anybody.

It's a shame to post a sincere question on a forum and get a snide response back from somebody who is supposed to be a "trusted" member. I assumed there would be more, for lack of a better term, professionalism on this forum.

Doc_T seems to have judged me to be, based on the post, one of those incompetent noobs we hear so much about. It only makes sense to conclude such a thing, and I don't hold it against him, but I'm a little surprised at how immature his response came out to be. When a person asks for advice, especially on such an esteemed forum, I would expect a respectful response.

I hate to have started an argument.

Don't eat black mold. Is there another way to say it?

I don't believe you are a girl. No girl would eat a moldy mushroom.
You're a puppet and/or troll.

And then you would be absolved of any wrongdoing and welcomed with open arms to the shroomery. And if they look good a free print?

Wow...

Didn't I just say something about being respectful?

I guess there aren't too many females who frequent this forum, much less grow their own mushrooms. I'm actually pretty pleased that I get to be an anomaly, but not so pleased that I get to deal with the inherent bullshit about it.

Again, the black mold disappeared after the mycelium colonized the jars. The mushrooms grew and showed no sign of anything unusual, mold or otherwise. They dried normally, they smell normal, they look fine, and I was really more curious as to the nature of the mysterious contaminant than about whether or not I should eat them.

Has anybody ever had jars that were contaminated, only to then become fully colonized and produce healthy looking pins and shrooms? If so, what did you find out about it? If not, then what would you imagine the contaminant to be? Black slime, maybe?

 i guess noone believes in freelove anymore. But im just playing minty unless you want too. But for real you should get a good quality macro shot of your jar. Molds are hard to identify and some that thrive on grains have nasty toxins.  Also its hard to see the full extent of the molds mycelium. I believe it could be possible to have thetoxins in your mushroom if they share the same foodsource.but honestly im not sure on that. I would personally not eat them and i have an iron stomache. Cactus never makes me puke.
