Any Actual Mycologists?
    #14343364 - 04/24/11 12:45 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Are there any people here that are actual mycologists? Or going to school studying mycology?

If mycologists means one who grows/studies Fungus then you bet your bottom dollar I am. A clandestine/"amateur" rather than a professional but most mushroom enthusiasts label themselves mycologists, even if it's not their profession.

Come on man....you just gonna leave me hanging like that? Inquiring minds need to know. Whats going on that only a "real" mycologist can solve for you?

I'm a serious amateur but I still would like to know what the heck the question is? Come on man it takes a half way intelligent human being to do any of the shit we do here. You might be surprised to find out some of us have "brains"!

Well I'm pretty new to all of this but I'm also very inquisitive so I've got to ask, "how do you presume to get a positive ID without a fruit?" I would assume that you would either have to grow it out or send it to someone who knows what exactly they're looking at under a scope? Please don't flame! I just am very curious.

Oo I see y'all covered that now lol. I trust your ability to identify under a scope. That book you just dl will describe the characteristics to you. Grow it on agar and compare.

It'd be nice to have some pictures to compair it to. I don't trust my ID. I might contact a local univercity buyt I don't think any of them have mycology courced. Maybe a microbiologist can help?

I read that the sclerotia lose their viability one desicated. So I might not be able to get it to form stomata. However I will try crackin it opento see if I can get a hyphea to reanimate. well see what happens!

But really id like to talk to a mycologist see if they are willing to take a look

As soon as u get it, take it in a glovebox and snap it in half, taking tissue from the center. That's mycelium yo. Transplant it onto agar. Take a pic of the growth under a microscope like anon did over in chem, then post it on here and I can think of a few people who will be able to identify it for you.

Can the people providing the sample tell you anything about where/when it was collected?

It's about the time of year, maybe I should make a trip to the fields for some freshies. If certain events hadn't had just transpired I probably would be doing so.
