Question about Bacteria
    #14343223 - 04/24/11 12:00 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

When bacteria forms inside a colonizing jar, can it always be determined by the smell?  I haven't opened the colonizing jars, but in checking them today all three appeared to have a small excess of liquid of some sort around the sides and on the bottom.  One reason for that could be injecting too much spore solution, which I think I did in two of the jars but not the other, but I cannot tell any difference between the three.  One thing is, the jars seem to be colonizing at a normal rate, the only potential warning sign is that there appears to be too much liquid of some sort, not way too much but you can see a spray of it on the sides.  Is there any way that at some point I can tell for certain if its okay or if its not?

Sounds normal, but post pics. And stop breathing on your jars.

So, my whole first batch was colonized by some kind of yellowish bacterial pool and we eventually had to pitch all of them. I had a feeling that even if we had sprouting the bacteria would ruin the culture. Is this even slightly accurate?

Yellowish pool sounds like bacteria, and that likely would have lead to failure.
Hard to say much without pics though.

I'm attempting to post some pics I took using Photo Booth.  They aren't ideal but I think they're good enough to show the issue.  The jars managed to fully colonize, but it should be known that (A) parts of the mycelium retreated for a time before recolonizing and (B) in some areas of the congealed moisture the cakes shrunk a bit from the jar.  That might tell you something too.  If, as I suspect, these are contaminated by bacteria, I'd like to know what kind and exactly what I should do to avoid this in the future, because this time I really don't know what I did wrong, I followed the PF Tek really well and I thought I did everything right.  Apologies if there is something wrong with the pictures, I'm just learning to use this application.

Hard to say from the pics :s
The white thing seems to be mycelium.
If the jar took ages to colonize some of the older parts (the first to be colonized) could make what is called mycelium piss and tend to a yellow liquid. The droplets you see on the last 2 pics are not a problem if you're worry by that.
If you really used too much spore solution, indeed, it will probably contam from the bottom, where the liquid is standing. Unless you have outrageous visible colors or a distinct mold, i wouldn't be so worry.
