let's hear your definitions of hacker
    #14342861 - 04/24/11 10:16 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I think, or at least I hope, that most of you know that a hacker is not a computer criminal, but rather a curious person who seeks to understand. I need a definition that sums this up. I'm having a hard time coming up with one that truly defines 'hacker' in such a way that reflects the true nature of hacking versus the hollywood/popular media definition as a person who commits crimes on a computer. Hackers come in many flavors and computer hacking is but one of these. Tim Allen with his modifying of the vacuum cleaner on Home Improvement is even hacking.

Some of you are better with words than me and I know you guys know what I'm sayin', so let's hear it, please.

it's hard to distinguish between what I may understand a "hacker" to be and the visceral reaction the general public may feel when the word hacker is used. perception is reality, and many people, myself included have been indoctrinated with the concept that a hacker is someone who circumvents the security or intended functionality of a product for various reasons. they are seen in a bad light due to the power they can potentially yield. power=potential for abuse.

Well, since I'm taking an ethical hacking class in school...

According to Hands-On Ethical Hacking and Network Defense, a hacker is "a user who attempts to break into a computer system or network without authorization from the owner."

If you change "a computer system or network" with a broader word... perhaps it could fit your definition?

I think that hacking definitely carries the connotation of computers though.

I agree that it carries a certain connotation, which is why I want to find a definition that gets away from that.

Something about circumventing intended use seems promising. Keep them coming, along with the opinions, thanks!

How would you (Fungal-One) feel if I "hacked" your apartment?

A hacker is a nerd with a mohawk who listens to rush and chaotic dischord, hates the government, uses computers to dismantle his enemy, and is apparently socially awkward yet is surprisingly confident around women when portrayed on the big screen.
