Agaricus sounds right. What colour was the spore print?

The only other possible thing I can think of is Volvariella but that looks a bit wrong. I think it's an Agaricus.

Is the colour it stains meant to be a good indication of weather or not its edible ?

I think the best indicator is odour. If they smell phenolic (chemical or ink smell) they are not edible. If they smell pleasant (mushroomy or like almonds) chances are they're good to eat. Cooking usually makes the odour more pronounced.

Some people stay away from all yellow staining species, but some yellow stainers are edible.
