Ever seen a tornado?
    #14341556 - 04/24/11 12:27 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I have experienced a major earthquake but never a tornado, hurricane, tsunami, snowstorm, or dirty thunderstorm. Tornado's look so ominous to me. It gives me this certain feeling inside. I can definitely see how people can manifest a god character after seeing something such as a tornado.

I had the experience of being in a 24hr diner and watching a tornado rip and
twist a tall sign out of the ground, took the roof off a building and hit the
restaurant I was in, luckily it only knocked out power and peeled the bricks
off the back, maybe a week later I was at home with a roomie, in the garage
smoking a joint, the door was open and we heard trees dropping behind the
house, it took off the chimney cap and touched ground again right across the
street and uprooted a huge oak tree, it bounced a couple of times, hit a few
houses and then ripped a neighborhood my GF lived in a new one.... took out
about 60 of the 90 homes

IMO, tornadoes are worse than hurricanes because tornadoes are unpredictable

Yea, but I don't remember it.  WHen I was born, a tornado ripped through the trailer park we lived at in Omaha, it destroyed the trailers on each side of us.  I also saw one 2 years ago, in Cinncinnati, there were sirens going off, and when I looked out in the distance there were two funnel clouds hanging out of a thunderstorm cloud, about 2 miles away, they were halfway to the ground.

we get them frequently near me, seems this town is tornado resistant though
because they hit all around us but never hit the town, when I first moved out
here one hit the neighboring county in alabama and did more than $600 million
in improvements

We get em every once in a while. I live in a good sized valley. A few years ago a
tornado came through here. It fucked up 2 houses on one side of the valley.
Then it hit 2 more houses on the other side of the valley.

I think it jumped over us cause mah house is in line between those 4 houses.

what's fucked is that they tell you to find some place in the house to get
away from windows ans shit, it doesnt make a difference when the tornado rips
your house apart, there really is no hiding from a tornato unless you're
under ground

Is that a storm bunker, the school bus?  I remember in Okinawa I was in a Typhoon, they showed us a pic of a tree after that, a piece of corrugated steel from a roof had sliced almost all the way through a huge tree.

That's a damn good idea with the school bus , shit, I would live in something like that haha.....

I've been fascinated by weather since I was a little kid...Any sort of extreme weather gets me all sorts of stoked. Though they do cause damage and can be deadly, I'm envious of those of you that get intense thunderstorms. Unfortunately for me, where I live in California we only get a few thunderstorms a year and even more uncommon do they turn severe. Definitely not comparable to what ya'll have in the mid west, but some do turn severe and we actually had 4 tornadoes last month (Strongest was only an F2).

insurance here runs about $700/year but that covers anything including
flooding which will never happen since I'm on a mountain top, but because of
Al Gore's claim that the polar ice caps will melt I'm not taking any chances

That depends upon the strength of the tornado.

An F5, by the old scale, if you take shelter in your home will sweep your entire house of its foundation and make mince meat of your family but an F1 or F2 and you're probably fine.

Last week our civil defense sirens went off five times in one day from tornado warnings. We were smack dab in the middle of the sweet spot for tornadoes and I honestly lost count of how many storms we had those two days.

It was a murderer's row of storms, one after the other..no sooner would one sweep past than another would take it's place. At least a dozen from dawn till dusk..

That last day the mother, and I mean MOTHER, of all storms blew in ..the weather channel said my town had a tornado at the airport and like any sane person I IMMEDIATELY got in my car and went to confirm this..

trouble, it's an 80 mile drive to get to atlanta and a shitload of trouble
and it's not as though you cant make friends in small towns, there's other
people here, that's why the population is 800

My home is tree bound so there is no visual of the skyline and I hate that..always wanted to see a tornado..drove one mile south and got some clearance..pulled into a parking lot to see angry, black skies..seemed to be moving east so I got on highway and was immediately hit by torrential downpour and hail...thought for sure my windshield would get cracked..then it cleared and I kept taking quick peaks to my south where the action would be..wasn't disappointed..angry, black clouds dipping down..

The quarter sized  hail was hitting my windshield like popcorn..I pulled into an overhead awning at a gas station on a hill ( my plan all along) near fields, no trees..this is what I saw:

an f3 would wipe out a home and drop a dump truck on it, the scale seems to only really denote the size of the storm and the enormous path of destruction it can cause. if an f1 hit your house it would do a great deal of damage here's a sample of F1 damage

If you're referring to the F scale, no, the numbers refer to the wind speed- has nothing to do with the radius or path of the tornado.

I really doubt an F1 did that kind of damage unless the structure was a mobile home. Those look like three different structures ( love the untouched boots on pic #1)..the last pic was some serious winds judging from the brick exterior.

No, an F1 would be comparable to straight line winds and might break limbs, take a roof off or  knock some trees over.

I was in straight line winds too and they're no joke. Heard the roaring minutes before it hit and it knocked so many trees down that I was trapped out at my friends in the country all day until they cleared the road.

Mostly in April-May.

And we (in MS) aren't even in the hot zone. One thing though, when you like in Oklahoma you are probably in the plains. Here, we have trees everywhere. They can see that shit coming for miles away.

That's why what I did by getting in my car was sane (to me) because at least I could see what I was dealing with. And I'm SO glad I did because I have memories of a lifetime...cars jammed under the awnings of a large gas station to avoid hail, people out of their cars with cell phone cams pointed skyward..hail like popcorn, supercell that was a beast spitting lightning, angry black clouds, RAW power. I'lll never forget it.

But don't chase shit unless you know what the hell you're doing!

About one in three Supercells spawn tornadoes. This is an example of one:

Even though my supercell didn't produce a ground tornado (funnel clouds spotted although I wonder if that wasn't the supercell itself since it's rounded) you come away with one impression from witnessing something like that:

VIOLENCE

That's what it felt like. Like you were nothing.

Violence and raw power that is palpable. It had everyone's attention at that gas station, I'll tell you that.

:stoner:

.

A thousand times this. I want to go on a storm chase and see a tornado :datass:

I have never seen a tornado in person, but I've experienced one. Four years ago I was in the shower one morning and there was a thunderstorm. I didn't think it was any big deal because it was in the middle of January and it had been being cold. The thunder started getting louder and closer and then all of a sudden it was really loud and I was just like FUCK.

I turned the water off and ducked down in the shower and I just knew I was about to die, lol.

The power went out and it tore up my room. Ripped part of the ceiling off and a big rafter fell in my bed right on top of my pillow where I would have been laying had my mom not woke me up earlier.

I still have a fascination with them though, and used to dream about them all the time.

Here is the damage it did to my back yard.

all 3 were f1 tornados, it all depends on if the tornado hits your house or not

F1- wind speeds from 70-120mph
F2- wind speeds from 113-157mph

No, an F1 would be comparable to straight line winds and might break limbs, take a roof off or  knock some trees over.

I really doubt the first pic is of F1 damage unless that structure was very, very weak..it's hard to say what we're looking at there..

The definition of the F1:

"peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos pushed off the roads; attached garages may be destroyed"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fujita_scale

I think you're probably looking at an F2 or F3 there..never really seen that kind of damage classified as an F1 and I've been studying tornadoes as an amateur since I was like 10 years old.

People make mistakes. I have never heard of an F1 pulling a structure off its foundation. That doesn't fit the definition of an F1.

The original point I was making is that the F scale is not measured by the size of the storm or its path but by the destruction it causes on the scene which is determined afterwards.

There was originally an F scale created by Dr. Fujita which has been replaced by the "Enhanced" Fujita scale:

The new scale, yes. The information you gave was giving the old scale.

The new one is designated by EFx as opposed to Fx.

Essentially, there is no functional difference in how tornadoes are rated. The old ratings and new ratings are smoothly connected with a linear formula. The only differences are adjusted wind speeds, measurements of which weren't used in previous ratings, and refined damage descriptions; to standardize ratings and to make it easier to rate tornadoes which strike few structures

so both scales are accurate (as wiki states) its just as if one acts like a curve so to speak than the other one.

makes sense.

yes, an F1 is an EF1 and they original scale based it on the damaged caused
just as the new scale does while the new scale adds the wind speed

Yes, and the first pic shows a building blown off it's foundation which is inconsistent with an F1 or EF1.

The original Fujita scale says that only mobile homes are demolished by an F1. That is not a mobile home. It is a gas station.

again, quality of construction, some mobile home are build as well as any
other, some gas stations are poorly built, wind load plays a significant factor
and as I stated, not everything works by the book

you may be surprised at how poorly built a lot of commercial buildings are,
checkers restaurants are basically mobile homes, the can break ground and
have it open for business in a week if permits and inspections are timely

I live right on Lake Erie, and we had a big one hit a few years back. It killed 15 people and they literally had to use my school as a morgue for a few days. We usually get a few a year, but that one was the biggest and it ripped right through the center of our town.
