Results of my Morel Hunts
    #14339637 - 04/23/11 05:24 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Been out and about a few times in the last week exploring and hoping for some morels.  I'm extremely new at identifying wild mushrooms so I'm mostly guessing here.

My best guess is one of the false morels, Gyromitra infula.

Urnula craterium (Devil's Urn) I think.

Some more of the same thing I think.

Closest thing I could find is Plectania melastoma

No Clue

Some sort of wood ear / jelly fungus.  I see these all the time but not usually that many one on limb.  Are those edible?

Another little brown mushroom.

Tiny little orange cups.

The one and only morel I've managed to find. Not sure what species.

I thought this log looked neat.

Some sort of old large shelf mushroom on a stump.

Trametes versicolor - Turkey Tail

These mushrooms were pretty tough and somewhat hard to disloge but not quite as tough as those wood-like shelf mushrooms.
That last picture didn't come out well but included for reference.

Some more little browns.

3 that I have no idea about.

Some cool looking bright orange mushrooms on some fallen limbs.

Yet some more little browns

Little brown mushroom on a log.

Some white mushrooms on a log.

Tremella mesenterica or similar

Some critters and plants I ran across.

I love wild ginger flowers.  They're so pretty!

What kind of snake is that?

Black rat snake.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_rat_snake

Very common and non-aggressive.  Hold a wild one for 30 seconds and it'll feel like you've had it as a pet for years.

Cool with me. If I can run across them again I'll grab a better picture.  I found them under a log while looking for salamanders.

Are they just different stages in the growth?  They looked different enough that they might be different species to me.

I'm going to go out tomorrow and grab those oysters.  As far as I know I've never found any in the wild before.  I thought oysters were more of a fall species so I wasn't really looking for them.

Went out again today for about 5 hours.

#1

#2 (Exidia recisa)

#3

#4

#5

#6

#7  This was pretty interesting to see.  I'm not sure if the mushrooms at the base were related to the mycelium on the trunk  so this may be 2 different species on the same tree.

#8  This was particularly cool.  Noticed some funky mycelium with funky metabolites.  After a close inspection for fruiting bodies I saw some TINY little things.

#9 Noticed some BRIGHT yellow mycelium under this log.  I looked for fruiting bodies and saw some small pinkish red fruits forming but they were difficult to photograph. I marked the location and will check back later to see what they grow into.  The fruits had the same color as some Laetiporus I found last fall.

#10

#11 - Cool tree covered in mushrooms.  Was difficult to get a good picture showing all/most of it.

#12:  This two little things were weird.  I'm not even sure they're mushrooms.

13: Arachnopeziza aurelia - Found another patch.  Ridiculously easy to miss.

#14:

#15:

#16:  I'd been out "off-trail" morel hunting and then I find these right in the middle of my trail.  Any idea what species of morel these are?

The morel patch was guarded on either side by two venomous reptilians guards.

#17:

#18  The oysters from yesterday.  How confident are you guys that these are oysters? If you're positive I'm having Morel & Oyster Soup tonight for dinner.

#19:

#20

Some various flowers / critters I found on the way.

Great post, Spongiform!:handth: Love all the herps and flowers you include.

Those are half-free morels.

Nice Jack-in-the Pulpit. I wouldn't have touched that millipede on a dare!:slug:
