Non-Practicing Catholic [or Jew or Pastafarian or Whatever]

So WTF does that mean anyway?
Does it mean that you KNOW god wants you to go to church every Sunday and tell him how amazingly amazing he is and stuff, but you straight up refuse to do it?
Is that it? Can a church person please splain me this because I just don't understand.

Well, I'm not a church person, but have infiltrated (read: been forced to attend and coerced by girlfriends) many times, and my feelings are:
Jew: Jew is often used as a ethnicity rather than a religion. Someone who's non practicing may mean they come from a jewish family, are ethnically jewish, or somthing like that.
Catholic: Catholicism has so many rules that the practitioners generally don't know and violate, that pretty much everyone is in violation of the catechisms and teachings. Just their sex rules alone condemn most people to eternal damnation, as the vast majority of people who identify as Catholic have masturbated and not confessed, or have had sex outside of vaginal-only sex between two married people who intend to procreate and take no actions to inhibit procreation other than time-of-month planning or have had an abortion or assisted in any way someone having an abortion and not applied to the Vatican to have their automatic excommunication lifted (you go to hell if not).
Further, their belief in both original sin, that every person except Jesus sins, and that you must confess your sins to a priest (almost always, a few cases where you can confess to god instead) and die without any unconfessed mortal sins, means most Catholics are going to eternal hellfire anyways- by their very faith. Further, those who've been formally or automatically excommunicated will go to hell regardless of whether they've confessed (such as those who assist someone in getting an abortion in some way), and almost everyone who isn't damned will go to purgatory for unconfessed venial sins.
Despite all this, and the fact that the vast majority of Catholics are hell-bound by their own faith, which they know little about: at a Cathlic funeral, in my experience, they still pretend like the person is going to heaven. Its really strange, even when the deceased did not give confession during the time they were in the hospital preceding death (or died suddenly and not right after confessing), and the family knows they used contraception, were divorced, remarried, or didn't attend mass every week, et cet, the priest still prays for God to accept the departed and speaks of the person being in a "better place". How's that for the ultimate delusion? How does this lie comfort the family? Do they really know so little of their religion they think a contraceptive user who didn't confess and make ammendes and a mass-avoider/ remarried person will go to heaven? What kind of credibility does a Priest have who says these things about someone they know got a divorce, didn't attend mass regularly during their last years, and who didn't confess before death?
As for the protestant religions, I would be a little less harsh than you seem to be. Many of these don't make church attendance a requirement/ sin if you don't go, like catholicism, and they tend to not have such fast and hard rules like the Catholic Catechisms. As a result, I could see someone being a protestant and not attending church or doing churchy things and still be able to call themselves an observant Protestant who expects salvation upon death.
Of course, most religious people tend to know nothing about their religion and I doubt many of the people really put that much thought into it. I believe in many cases they simply mean to say they expect to be saved and have eternal life, but don't have time for all the bake sales and bullshit.

most religious people tend to know nothing about their religion
You're not kidding:
Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge, outperforming evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.
On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively. Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for differing levels of education.

One of my best friends in 9th grade was a religious Romanian kid; he was pretty kooky, but I think beaners are far more hilarious.
