Princeton invention delivers 3D sound from ordinary laptop speakers

This video explains the science behind 3D audio in a comprehensible and interesting way. I wonder how long before this is just a standard way to record music? Shpongle 3D would melt my face.

A well-recorded, well-engineered album played back through hifi equipment gives the same effect though IME.  I wonder how that "filter" of his works and its impact on SQ.

This^^.  One of the hallmarks of very high end audio equipment is "directionality", and being able to pinpoint or hear discrete sounds and/or instruments.  You can pick it up really well while sitting in front of good hardware.

The loss "directionality" is also due (in part) to modern recordings.  In the "old days", a band might play in front of a series of mics.  Naturally, sound would reach the mic at different intensities and different times depending on where a musician was sitting.  Thus, directionality was picked up.

IMO, discrete outputs/speakers (e.g. a 5.1 or 7.1 surround systems) will always outperform a 2 channel (stereo) system.

This has existed for quite awhile, its all about playing with what makes people perceive an object coming closer, moving to the side, etc. (reverb, pan, filters, physical modeling..) there's a lot to it, and rarely is it done very well by anyone but the best engineers... but that name '3d audio' bothers me  fucking 3d everything now  audio has always had the illusion of three dimensions.

3d audio has been around forever.  You have to know exactly where the listeners ears are and where the speakers are.  The more exact you know those things the more 3d you can make it.

I used to do my music in full 360 degrees until i realized its pointless unless you're sitting in the same place listening to it how i made it.

headphones are about as close as you're going to get.

pretty much all artists, including spongle already use alot of stereo imaging.  Check out wisp, his mastery of stereo is insane.

I disagree with you guys. Just the short example from the video sounded more realistic and had more directionality than any other kind of recording i've heard. And this is from my total piece of shit computer speaker and not some "very high end equipment". If this level of directionality exists already in expensive equipment, than this is at least a cheaper way to experience the effect.

3d audio exists in homemade speakers made from plastic cups.  Its a production/post production processing technique.

I think the key aspect about this princeton guys work, is the left/right noise cancellation. If this is perfected then the effect would be experienced from any position to the speakers.

all that stuff was done a long time ago.

I have a program on my computer that can take sound files, and you put them into a 3d matrix.

You can add as many sounds as you want within the matrix, move them around however you want, add objects or make rooms with the correct acoustic properties.

None of it matters unless you know where the speakers are and where the listeners ears are... which i guess is why this is being gimmicked as specifically for a laptop, because with a laptop you can kind of guess.

Didn't work for me probably because i was slouching a little.

There are at least a hundred programs for stereo imaging.

edit: i am fantastically interested in this stuff btw.  When i get this dance music shit all wrapped up i'm going to delve into headphone music with as much 3d sound as i can do.

check out wisp!

2nd edit:  OH SNAP!?  did they not talk about this in the video?
