Curling Caps and other Oddities (pic)
    #14324748 - 04/20/11 07:55 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

(1) When does one pick these; will they be useful?
(2) Is there a general cause?
(3)Can one avoid this in the future?

Specs:
75f + constant humidity 90% - I know that is low. I'm working out the kinks with a new wood and glass terrarium.

There is a good chance these are Golden Teachers.

you asking about those minor mutations? could be the primordia formed invitro. That frequently causes some minor defects in the fruitbody.

Alot happened in 24 hours. Thanks for the reply. I agree that it could be an invitro incident. Especially since they pinned less than 12 hours after birth.

Here is a update photo...

could be a lack of fresh air exchange. are you misting and fanning?

they are looking better though.

I have a few of these popping up as well. They are usually just mutants...Still edible, and will still grow into full-ish fruits. They look funny as all hell though.

its just a mutation. one of the great things about growing from multispore is you can end up with some damn weird mushrooms. ive seen many that look like they have mouth and teeth becuase the underside of the mushroom has developed on the top instead.

I doubt your humidy is low, otherwise youd be seeing splits on the top of the mushroom (like an x been cut in the middle)

What are you using to measure humidity (has it been calibrated correctly.

Also, your best using a shotgun terrarium :-) i wouldnt be using wood. Wood gets damp, damp wood grows mold

Thanks for the info. It is part mutation (the upturned cap/gills) and part air exchange (cap and stem size).

Humidity is being measured with a digital hygrometer. The trusted cigar store employee said that one hygrometer in particular was really good and would work in a terrarium and if it doesn't work it could be returned no questions asked. It wasn't calibrated so much as tested in a few different environments (extreme dry/wet ; hot/cold) then crossed check with other instruments.

The wood was stained (bass wood with a nice oak stain) and then waterproofed so no mold would grow. The biggest problem with the terrarium is the height and the size of the holes on the bottom. I don't think they are large enough for the heat from thermogenesis to pull air thru them. That combined with the height makes the CO2 being wisked off  an issue. I rigged up a small 12volt fan in there today.

I'll post pic in the future when I get the bugs worked out. I didn't go with the shotgun terrarium for aesthetic reasons. Nothing wrong with the shotgun terrarium, it's def functional and I would recommend it to almost everyone.
