Incredibly hot in here today.
    #1432467 - 04/05/03 09:20 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hi. This guy I know just followed the verm/coir casing tek, but omitted a crucial step on one of his casings: he applied the mix before cooling adequately. The stuff was still basically steaming hot...it had to be 106+. What are the chances of the myc fully recovering and colonizing the casing material? Thanks for any help with this .

I agreed with you completely, then I thought, 'Maybe myc. would eat the nutrients comprising dead myc.'...?

Has anyone else done this before?

you need two peices of information to answer this question:

1. The actual temperature of the substrate at time of casing mix at time of application.

and

2. The temperature at which thermal death occurs in mycelium.

if you killed all the mycelium, or formed a layer of cooked mycelium between surviving mycelium and the casing mix, it's a safe bet that nothing will grow.

Thanks for the reply. The guy is going to wait and see how bad the thermal death was, and then probably remove the casing material , scratch into the myc. and re-case.

Sorry to bump this, but has anyone done this w/out having to re-case? Thanks.

HAHAHAH i did this SAME thing last night!!!

i had microwaved the bottom layer of vermiculite, and i had cooled it somehwhat by spraying it with n2o2, i let it cool for about 15 minutes but it was still pretty warm to the touch...i then put the crumbled substrate and then cased it in coir....hopefully the top of the spawn will survive and fruit

Easily done . The guy was pretty tired, and didn't realize what he was doing until there was a huge amount of steaming casing material on his shit :smirk:. He's going to check the progress later tonight (two days later), and I'll report what he sees.

this happened to my friend as wel. i believe the material had cooled somewhat before he applied it, but i don't know exactly how bad it was. within a few days some mycellium has been seen growing on top of the casing layer, but it was a considerably small amount. he hasnt checked the casings in a few days so he doesn't know how well it is doing. as long as the mycellium didn't completely die, will it pick up it's colonization speed with time?
