PF Jar Issue
#14334477 - 04/22/11 05:45 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

Hello all!
I just received a set of PF Tek jars from a sponsoring vendor. I tried searching and couldn't find anyone else with my problem. The vendor did not bother putting holes in the PF jars, thus I need to do it myself. I was wondering what the most sterile way to put holes into already made jars would be? I was debating on completely sterilizing the room and all tools involved then opening the jars and simply drilling the holes. A friend suggested re-sterilizing the jar lids, a hammer, and a nail and simply making the holes with the lids on the jars. I've also read that you can inoculate your jars without holes by just opening the lid and injecting. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

Vendor probably didnt put holes in it so it wouldnt contam in the mail. I dont know a way to put holes in a jar in a sterile fashion because the fact that you are hitting something through the lid is forcing some type of thing down into the jar. I would just lift the lid JUST ENOUGH to get the needle in there and inject .5-1 cc per jar. That's your safest bet. After these jars are done, poke holes and use an injection port on them and youll have your own little bad ass set up so you dont need to mess with ordering it again.

I'd probably just take the lids off, make holes, replace lids and steam sterilize for 60 minutes or so. Kinda a shitty situation to be in.

If you have a PC just drill them and re-sterilize. Ive also heard that steam sterlizing is sufficient for brown rice flour but i never like to take chances, though it is an option. You could also use a glove box, sterilize your drill bit and drill very carefully. if you dont insert the drill past the dry verm layer it should be fine, the less you go down into the jar the better. You can try steam sterilizing if you have no PC after doing so anyway and that should work out. BUY A PC!

Another awesome option. It is shitty dude. I understand why the vendors do that but for god sakes all they have to do is put one hole and some poly fill haha it's not fuckin' rocket science hahaha

you could use a small drill bit and flame sterilize it before you drill each hole. Dont know, just a suggestion...

steam sterilization with pf cakes is completely awesome and easier for a noob than fucking with a pressure cooker, espcially if they have no idea how to use one for mycology, because its different that just cooking with it.

I was being serious...its a good idea. The icon was supposed to go at the end when I was talking about the vendors being cheapskates, not toward you bro Sorry if thats what it seemed like, im clumbsy with quoting

Does it have a dry layer of vermiculite on top? If so, I've had good luck with open air inoculations. Be smart about it, kill all air flow, lysol the shit out of the air, glove box it if you feel the need. Loosen all the lids, and then inoculate as quickly as possible. The verm provides a good contam barrier, but only if it's dry. I'll probably catch shit for it, but it's worked just fine for me in the past.

First off stop buying premade jars, its easier and cheaper to make your own, and you will have the peace of mind knowing you made them and experience the process from start to finish.
Your best bet, and not to sound rude is to empty the jars and start from scratch. Honestly if you are going to go and resterlize them then why not re make them up. Follow this tek

Also remember when steaming Pf jars always do so for 90 minutes not the 60 as said above.
It will take you no time at all to whip out a few PF jars and is alot better redoing them over, who knows how they were made or how old they are

Agreed, you might ruin the moisture content if you resterilize them and they could end up too dry.

Thanks a bunch for all the responses! I think I'm going to try to salvage what I can from the jars, will make my own if these don't work out. I was also wondering if I could just purchase the same type of lids, drill the holes in them and sterilize the lids by boiling/soaking in alcohol, then just put the new lids on the jars inside of a glovebox right before inoculation? Or would I be better off just doing it by opening the lid/leaving them loose and topped with foil? Thanks again for all the helpful responses!

It will honestly cost you at most 10$ to get BRF and Verm to make new jars up and will be worth it.

U paid for pre sterile jars you should use them. Just open the lids a bit in a glove box and inoc. Quickly but safley.

If the PF Tek jars came filled and sterilized without holes, can't you just return them to the vendor?

That is actually a suggestion that I, for some reason, haven't thought of. Unfortunately the vendor is closed until Tuesday so I will have to check then.
