My first Oyster logs (Update 05/08/11)
    #14330260 - 04/21/11 09:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

It's been a long time coming and I've still got a long way to go. It's been three months since I started my endeavor to grow gourmet mushrooms and my first straw logs are almost ready for harvest.

The particulars

Pearl Oyster form Ralphster's
3' x 10" diameter straw logs inoculated with 6 quarts of rye spawn
Colonized for 3 weeks at 75°f
Fruited for 2 weeks at 60°f and 100% humidity

I am still having a hard time getting enough fresh air into my grow room so I will have to install another fan. I have another 11 logs ready to fruit. For the next batch I'm going to switch up the conditions a bit, raising the temperature to 65°f and dropping the humidity as low as is permitted (75% ?)

Are you growing for yourself, or are you trying to sell them to restaurants and such?

The goal is to supply restaurants, groceries and sell at farmers markets.

I'm going to give most of this first bunch away as samples.

Wait, you say those are pearl oysters?  Sure they're not king oysters?  Nice grow regardless... looks like you've got it down.  I had a risotto dinner tonight with asparagus and king oysters and it was delish.

Hmm, how sure are you guys? I kind of hope it's true because I'm having a hell of a time getting the caps to open up. They're also a bit dark for Pearl Oysters. Here is the syringe I received clearly labeled as Pleurotus Ostreatus.

Those are looking great, and definitely do look like king oyster.

I'm a little worried about the syringe of king oyster I got from ralph, I had a bunch of bags of straw/coir/wbs that never pinned and even two straw blocks that wouldn't pin either.

I was thinking it was because of not enough nutrients (I was under the impression king oyster needed more than straw) but now I'm starting to think my culture might not have been good or a different mushroom or maybe I stretched it to senescence by making a grain LC?

The weird thing is the blocks formed these puffballs of mycellium and I was sure that pins would from but never did.

I'm trying again with wheat grain spawn to pasteurized straw and 20% alfalfa in straw logs and hopefully I'll have some better results.

They look good.  I have grown the pearl a few times and the caps tend to lighten when they mature,  even though yours appear darker than what I have seen.  It is next to impossible for me to mix up syringes and Grobo I will send you a King Oyster syringe so you can tell for your self just pm your info to me.

Here is a cluster I picked this morning. I don't know how close to full maturity they are but I didn't want them dropping spores all over the place.

The ruler didn't come out too clear, the whole thing is about 6" tall.

They look nice,  but they do look like Kings.  I want to send you a King syringe and see how they turn out in your growing conditions.

Put another 11 logs in the room this morning for a total of 14. Things are about to get interesting...

Very nice looking setup you got brother, not sure how I missed this
thread before.

Very interested to see how those logs turn out.

Out of curiosity what method are you using to humidify your room and
supply FAE?

For Humidity/FAE I'm using an Agar style ultrasonic bucket with a single fogger in it. I'm pushing the air with a 80 cfm fan hooked up to a HEPA filter unit. The air exiting the room goes through a dehumidifier before it mixes with the rest of the air in the basement.

There is a window open on one side of the basement and a bathroom fan pumping air out of a dryer vent on the other side.

With the fogger running nonstop it goes through about 20L of water in 24 hours. This causes a lot of condensation on the walls and ceiling and pools on the floor. I'm currently experimenting with my cycle timer to get the humidity just right.

The whole thing is still in a hacked together proof of concept stage. I'll post some pictures once it's all smoothed out.
