cars are easily converted to electric, as well as motorcycles. many of the on board systems such as breaking, signaling, suspension, and transmission can be reused to accepted a motor's rotor. i may convert a beater bike this summer, and when i get some money i'll covert a car. thats the beauty of switching between sources of fuel, the machinery can basically stay the same. and with hundreds of millions of cars out there, this is going to be big business.

i don't know how many years of crude are left around the world, but i'm not saying it should become obsolete soon because it's depleted. i'm saying it should become technically obsolete in our lifetimes because it's a silly, 20th century, fuel source. its way too complicated at every step and it's only competitive edge is the large infrastructure based on it and it's energy density. but we should just keep whats left of it to make polymers and all the other shit we make out of it.

seriously think about it;

crude goes from underground somewhere, to discovered (whether on accident or with very fancy sonar? equipment), to mined (i won't go into the complexities here, but it's understood), to processed (know anything about crude oil refining), to delivered (the oil distribution infrastructure is a monster of epic proportion; impressive but kind of silly with respect to efficiency and scale), and then it's all poured in the gas tank of a machine thats almost as complicated as the whole process that took to fill it up.

engines are kind of cool in a lot of ways. but their complexity is almost laughable. 100's of fucking moving parts to perform one very simple task, and that is deliver power to the transmition. an electric motor has a grand total of one moving part, the rotor, which can be attached to some wheels through a differential or a geared transmittion. delivers all the torque up front, roughly 5 times less expensive to fuel, and at least two times as efficient.

if you're that in love with your gasoline, simply put, you're a trick and gasoline is the bitch some corp is pimpin out to you. does it feel good?

I'm in love with cars, and yes, it feels good. I try to get the most MPG I can, but at the end of the day its not about how much gas I've burned, or hydrocarbons I've released, or dolphins I've murdered, but how much I've enjoyed burning gas, releasing hydrocarbons, and murdering dolphins.

This is a thread about cars and the people who love them, you're making it into electric vs. fossil fuels. :crankdre:

I don't think "car guys" will give up fossil fuels without a fight anyway. No matter how fast, good looking, or excellent the handling of an electric car, its just not the same, and never will be.

yeah... i understand. like i said in an earlier post; i feel jipped living in a time like this since i grew up drooling over subaru boxers, honda vtecs, and 6 cyl german sex. but after studying engineering for a few years i understand what the 'right' thing is.

Well, until there is an affordable electric car that can take me over a thousand miles and can recharge in a short period of time that wont require me to swap out all the batteries every 5 to ten years that cause there own share of environmental damage and does not look like this

electric can go fuck off.

i realize your entitlement to gasoline fed internal combustion engines may induce some strong emotions. but is that really worth being too stubborn to not do stupid shit over. iono...

No but it only takes a few minutes to refuel, unlike electric.

And I was thinking in an odd way, I could handle a 500 mile range if it only took 30 minutes to recharge.

yeah i know what you mean. recharge times are impracticable at this point unless you have a specific schedule that it happens to work great with. such as you recharge during your 8 hour work or sleep shift. they'd be inner city things until the tech gets better. had they researched batteries instead of engines we'd have nice batteries today. but at least we have some pretty nice engines.

It's not the Electric motors that are the problem, It's the batteries. You do know that all these LiPo batterys only have a life of about 500 recharge/discharge cycles. What is going to happen to all these wonderful electric cars when the batteries die?

But back onto the topic, I like to think of myself as a car guy, I drive a 1991 Toyota Mr2 Turbo. That thing is a downright blast to drive and can take a beating like no other car I have seen. :bigyesnod:

Eh, I think it's more to do with my car cost me less than $6,000, I can haul things in it, I can go places that no gasoline car can go, and the cheapest decent electric car is still in the $20,000 used with crappy old batteries.

If you want to buy me an electric car, I'd love to give up driving my pathfinder as a regular daily driving vehicle, but you still can't beat the performance of petrol when it comes to getting stuck on rocks and in mud.

Oh, and in the future, 'batteries' will be self-contained power producing modules with fuel that gets used and spent in a much more complex fashion than a standard alkaline today.  They'd be more like mini-powerplants rather than just a storage of charge.  That's what I'm hoping :3

Who knows how they'll manage it.

The batteries can be sent to get recycled and have the unreuseable components disposed of and with a swap needed only once ever 5-7 years and I cant see any difference between that then all the parts you end up replacing over the years on a gas car, and once the market grows substantially technology would advance and production costs would be slashed making the shit even cheaper.

Here's a real conversation between me and a kid with a lowered car.

"Dude watch out for the giant r.... Uh there's a dent in your floorboard."

True story, there was a giant fucking dent shoved into where my foot was supposed to be when he hit the rock, and it tore up his undercarriage and tie rods/control arm for that side of the car.  But then again I do live in granite mountain country.  Oh, it ripped some his spark rods off too, made a loud clunk when it came out but surprisingly didn't jam through anything.

I've taken that thing so many places, we've taken it places that people on ATVs stopped to watch to see if I would get stuck.  I've gotten it to the point where we've stacked rocks under the tires and in front progressively larger to crawl over things that were too high for the front end to initially crawl.  You should see the running boards, they're all dented and bent as fuck.  Good thing they're on there though, I can rock the thing on them without damaging the body.
