Noob's first grow. just started. Update: FIRST FLUSH!!!! LOTS OF PICS!!!!
    #14332695 - 04/22/11 10:34 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hello shroomery. Let me start by saying thanks for compiling all this great information in one place. You guys are awesome. I just started 20 pf jars, 10 GT and 10 Brazilian. I followed the lets grow mushroom bids to a t except I left the jars in my still air box after inoculation and put micropore over the holes. Is that okay? I live in a old old house so I'm real noid about contams.  I didn't retape the holes on the lids, just the hand holes, and since its micropore tape it shouldn't trap gas in the still air box right?

I don't really have a lot of questions since these boards have all the answers. This is going to be more of a log for other noobs so they can see how following the beaten path will, in fact, lead you to success.

Here's some pics of my incubation closet.

The whole rack.

GT's and close up.

Brazilians and close up.

Okay now I checked today and there's a funny spot on one of the brazilian jars. I don't think its contam. I think its just a thinner spot of myc, but I'm new to this so I thought I'd ask you guys cuz you know your shit.

See the spot I'm talking about? Its the only questionable spot on any of the jars so I'm hoping its just a thin spot like I think it is. Sorry for the huge pics. I couldnt upload em all cuz they're too big

OKAY!! so I have a few nice pics of the first flush of the 10 GT cakes and 3 brazillian

Here's a brazillian cake, this one took off from day one. I think this is like day 6 or 7 in fruiting. I had just picked a whopper off the left side that weighed 4.1g dry and a couple of other smaller but full grown mushies for a total of like 5.2g.

One of the GT cakes that was right behind this one. I don't seem to have any pics right before I harvested these two, but I figured it up and its almost a half ounce between these two, like 12 or 13g.

Now comes the flood of awesome pics...

Well I'm gonna pic all this tomorrow. I think I did a good job. I few great cakes a few not so great cakes. The brazilian cake that made the monster is already pinnning again!

Thanks! I will keep up this log and probably include pics after the colonization stage. I'm like a kid at Christmas time right now trying to wait for Christmas day to open my gifts!

Just wait until they are in the FC, you will have to adopt a few more holidays to fully express your joy.  The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is smash my face right into the side of the terrarium to have a peek... I am still flushing my first grow, and get overly excited when I see more pins popping up :]

Best of luck, you wont be disappointed!

make sure the temps inside the GB/SAB arent too hot,
remember the internal temps of the jars are going to compound
and get exponentially higher as the myc colonizes, especially with really agro mycelia.
a fully colonized jar can exceed 10°f above the ambient temps.

Hotter jars can leave the door open for thermophillic competitor molds
and increase the chance of metabolites.

if you have a thermometer check the inside of the box
and see what the temp is and add say 5-7 degrees just to be safe
and you will know what the internal temps might be at:super:

Thanks for that advice. I knew all that but didn't really think about it. I will stick my therm/hygrometer in the still air box with my jars to see how warm it is in there. 82-86F is the optimal temp range for colonization, right?

i would drop the temps to around 75. it might be a little slower but
won't be as favorable to contams.

Keeping temperatures in the mid to upper 70's to  very low 80's is optimal according to many sources. Mycelium produces heat during colonization, so keeping the temps too warm could cause the cakes to overheat. My Pf cakes colonized in the low 70's--all responded aggressively :]

Yeah, I realized I quote you there on accident.(I'm still getting used to this forum and how it works, etc.) Thanks for the fast response though. So if the jars are 6-10 degrees hotter than the air around them 72-75F should be good. I got it. Thanks all. Ill be sure to post up pics as I move forward.

So I'm wondering... like I said earlier, I live in a very old house(like 60 yrs old) and am very paranoid about contams. I went crazy cleaning the kitchen prior to making/sterilizing my jars. I even hung blankets and tarps over the doors and haven't allowed people in there, or my cats out of the bedroom. When can I let people back in to the kitchen without worrying about them carrying filth on them to destroy my cakes? I just want to be sure nothing goes wrong. I've gone to extensive lengths to keep everything sterile as possible, but mostly I feel bad for my kitties who are getting a shit deal. I have the jars in the still air box and the hand hole on the box taped over with micropore tape. That plus the Verm layer is super protective right?

The verm layer is your filter so you won't have to build a filtered air box or something for them to colonize in. That's the point.

Clean all u want, good deal, use some bleach or simple green or whatever you want to use, lysol. Set ur jars on a shelf somewhere and read up on what happens when they're done. By the time they are 100% colonized and consolidated, you'll need a fruiting chamber and come up with all sorts of ideas for little projects to work on like improved lids, maybe looking into a more stable Polyfil filter, opposed to dry shiftable verm.

This from what I read is the optimal temp for agar dishes. With the cakes and jars it gets hotter, like Barak was talking about.

meh. i live in 50's era public housing apt. it's
no longer subsidized housing, because these dumps
dn't meet the state's standards. it's dusty and we
constantly battle black mold that creeps up in the
corners and would spread everywhere i'm sure if we
did'nt clean it with bleach every few weeks.
with all that, i don't have much contamination
at all.

i sadly live in a house infested with black mold...and i honestly am disgusted and am about to live outside in a tent and just do my mushie growing inside and hope it doesnt get into my grows. black mold is deadly and the spores will build up in your lungs and f you up over time. i would suggest not "staying" in your house like im bout to do

Wow. That sounds terrible. I don't have any visible mold or anything so it sounds like my cakes are pretty safe. I just don't trust my cats not to fuck with stuff. I will wait until the jars are mostly colonized before freeing the lions from the bedroom. I don't trust any of my shelves to not have invisible mold spores so I will leave them in my sab until they are ready. It does make me feel a little better about opening the box to check them out a little.

Update, I checked today and here it is, almost 4 days since knocing up the GTs and I can see a little bit of growth where the solution went in. Not much but still exciting being as its my first grow. The brazilians still have no sign but I inoc'd them the day after the GT's so we'll see. Right now I'm a happy camper:cool:

Well its not a lot of growth, just enough for me to be excited. I got my copy of RR's videos in today so I know to expect 2-3 weeks of colonization time, maybe more. I'm already looking into rye, spawning to bulk, and casing. Got a pressure cooker from a friend so I'm really just so excited.  Thanks again to everyone here for all this amazing info. Looks like I'm gonna have a fun summer indeed.
