Help to id please: bought in Bali, Indonesia
#14332388 - 04/22/11 09:15 AM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

Hello everyone. Probably my mushrooms are very easy to id, but I'm a newbie so need an advice from someone more experienced. Just bought two packs of these mushies from a local shop. Had experience with some similar ones here before, took 1.5 pack and had an ego lost, now plan to take same amount. What would you say?

Habitat: Indonesia, not sure whereabouts they pick it
Gills: Dark, almost black
Stem: Aboout 4-6 cm, thin and dark
Cap: Small, around 0,5-1,5 cm, grey, more spherical than conical.
I'd be grateful for any tips. Thanks in advance

They remind me of a Copelandia species. Also REOMVOE THEM FROM THE BAG IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THEY SWEAT TO THE POINT OF ROTTING!!!!
Whoever sold you those does not know about transiting mushrooms. Picking/identifying them, maybe, but packing them, no ....

can you lay them all out and take another picture? I see several with charictoristics of Pan. cyanescens, but I think I see some that are not. Also don't think they are just because I said so, I'm not an expert

Oh. How do I store them then? I want to consume them on Thursday which is another 4 days. I've read that you better keep them with no air, is it a myth?
Thank you for the reply

This makes sense. Now they are not dry at all. How long will they handle being out here undried? Shall I keep them in the fridge this time? Cuz right now I have nothing to dry them out with, for another 10 hours. Oh.

whats wrong with sunshine? ive never had a problem with it. i wouldnt put them in the fridge unless they were fresh fresh and you had proper containers. IMO theres too much condensation in the fridge. but i personally lay them all out on newspaper or cardboard flats and have fans going on them and that works. food dehydrators are amazing.

put them in a paper bag in the fridge. they'll last four days. They're more potent fresh...if they're active. That picture doesn't tell me much at all.

pan cyans are known for the pinkish/reddish tones in the stem. I'm pretty sure I see some white stems in there, and those are possibley not pan cyans

Take them out of the bag, spread them out on a newspaper/paper towel in a cool dry area, if possible use a fan but if you don't have one thats fine. And don't put them in the fridge, they don't lose much potency when there dried. I hope you have a good time with them but be careful because Panaeolus cyanescens are very potent, dose accordingly.

it's four days, not four weeks. What's the point of drying them? Mushrooms taste better fresh and they absolutely lose SOME of their potency when they're dried, especially if done quickly or in the sun.

davide is right, just stick them in the fridge if you plan to use them soon. They might be partially dried out by time you do use them, but they'll still be good.

Agreed. According to Gerhardt's Panaeolus monograph, Panaeolus cyanescens stems should be colored like the cap.

what about David Arora's suggestion, in Mush. demystified,stem;...pallid to yellowish, greyish or pinkish and that pan tropicalis has smaller spores and no pinkish tinge( than pan cyans) and most of these mushrooms have pink stalks maybe thats a poor indicator, I stand corrected, but some are definately pinkish

I wouldn't put them in the fridge and expect them to be very good in four days. You might get food poisoning...
Try to dry them with a fan and they should be ok.
Kinda sketch though. Do you even know this person who is selling you these shrooms? How do you know it's not just some local scumbag who doesn't mind ripping off tourists by selling them random mushrooms? I'd be skeptical.

I paid Rp. 60.000 per bag which is about 7 US dollars. How much do they normally cost?

Mushrooms last just fine in the fridge, especially for just a few days. Its like buying mushrooms at the market and having them in your fridge, you just don't want to leave them in that plastic bag. Use a paper bag if your going to refridgerate them and they will be fine. I also highly doubt some local scum bag is going around selling random mushrooms to tourists. There are lots of places like Bali that sell psychadelic mushrooms to tourists to make money for their families, like Peru, Mexico, and a lot of others. I commend you for getting them identified before you eat them though. A lot of people aren't be so smart. I bet if you went back to the shop and asked what species they were someone would be able to atleast tell you what they are locally known as.

Yeah sure, except you know when you get mushrooms from the market or a store and they are already on the verge of being spoiled... so you want to eat them right away.
I dumpster-dive all my food, so most of the mushrooms I get are already on their way out. From the looks of OP's pics, those shrooms have already started to go bad. I'm sure they'll be fine for a day or so, but I wouldn't expect them to last for four days in a fridge. If they were really fresh then I'd say store them in the fridge in a paper bag, etc. But they are not really fresh, they're on their way out. So either dry them or make a tea and store it, or even put them in some vodka/grain-alcohol or something to preserve them.

The fridge does act as a dehydrator mind you. I've got dried Pleurotus specimens which I put in the fridge and for got about until they were dried, crispy remains became apparent to me. I can get pics in a bit of my herbarium samples.

the fridge has a coolant system which keeps the air dry so that the fridge doesnt fill up with water from condensation so over time they will dry. but if your just gonna keep them in there for a few days its no big deal unless you leave them out in the open in there. Thats why I said use a paper bag.

I'm not going to get started about vegans, but... weight or diet has not much to do with it. You have the same amount of synapses as a 300 lbs meat eater. That's all that counts.

G/K I always wondered this; a persons weight doesn't matter because they have the same no. of synapses, or it does matter because we measure the concentration in blood(where it goes, of course) and a 400lb man has more blood than 100lb man. You say it doesn't matter?
