Why do the Cubs suck every year despite a high payroll?
    #14297707 - 04/15/11 08:16 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Ownership problems, bad GM's?  They have a fan base like Boston who finially won two titles with the help of a high payroll and steroids but yet they suck almost every year.  Please someone explain this to me with understanding.

I don't know about the Cubs, but in general, a high payroll doesn't mean a good team.  Often, a high payroll leads to a team of individual stars that want all of the glory without sharing it with others.  The cliche "the whole is more than the sum of the parts" holds true for team sports.  If the members of the team don't work together, it doesn't matter how good they are individually, the team will usually fail.  I'd blame the GMs and coaches over the players.  Obviously, a team of stars can work, and work very well, but it takes a strong coaching staff to get the star players to work together as a team.

Pinella was as good as they come (questionably).  The Mets make the stupidist long term contracts and decisions over time.  Why do the Red Sox and Yankees seem to manage their teams overall so much better?  The cubs fans need a championship, the White Sox winning it was a slap in the face to the North side.
I hate the lockouts and how Pittsburgh was made into a never winning team.  If the NFL does that to the Steelers their will be riots.  With the fan base and devotion (not by me but as a sports fan) I hope they win one.

The Cubs and their fans just expect to lose. It's a longstanding part of their tradition.

It was with the Red Sox until their epic 3 games down comeback against the Yanks and easy sweep of the Cards.  SOME FANS FINALLY BELIEVED!  But I get what you are saying, lovable losers, time for them to stop cherishing that.  I would love to see them win just because of how much their fan base cares about the game and loves it.

They don't always suck and neither did the Red Sox.  They just never got over the hump.  Only one team wins each year, that doesn't mean that all 29 other teams sucked.

Cubs had a big problem for many years because they were owned by a newspaper company that wasn't even competent to manage a newspaper company.  Lou's a better than decent manager, although he's got a bit of Burnout Billy in him, but they really never had the best talent.  Close a few times but never anybody's idea of the best in any one year.  Contrast that with the Yanks, Red Sox and Phillies, for recent examples and it isn't all that surprising that they haven't reached the pinnacle.  It takes a little bit of luck, too, and if you aren't the absolutely most talented you need more of it.  Maybe they shouldn't have fucked with the goat.

Seriously?  They have had two good runs in a long time and all those teams you mentioned have a championship recently.  It's not like the Braves winning there division for, what 15 straight years?  But still at least they got one championship.

All I'm saying is that just one championship would mean a great deal to the city and it's fans, so much more than a Florida team would.

Oh I don't give two shits about whether they win or not and the Chicago fans can suck my dick.  It's just that they've had bad luck.

Because Chicago is a fucking shitty sports city.

That really has nothing to do with it but it's the truth.

Didn't The Bulls have some pretty good seasons?

How long has it been now for the Cubs? Like 105 years without a title?

One reason, they use a roster spot on Jeff Samardzija. Another reason, they bat their second best hitter in the eighth spot (Geo Soto).

Well, I'm unfortunately a Cubs fan.  Jim Hendry(GM) has signed some of the most piss poor deals in baseball in his tenure as a GM and has had a BIT more success than his predecessors but when it comes down to it we have washed up veterans on stupid money taking up places young guys should be playing.  Deals like the Garza deal are likely to backfire if they haven't already.  Garza's thrown 1 good game all year including spring training and it was against a dismantled Padres team.  On the other hand, our throwaway outfielder(Sam Fuld) is hitting around 400 for the Rays and making the highlight reels every night.  I got the pleasure of seeing him play when they first brought him up a couple years and I've never seen a kid hustle like that.  We've got a bum in Soriano wrapped up in an Arod style contract, Fukudome cost around 40 million, Samardzija should have played football.  Just lots of poor poor decisions all around and they still fill the park every year so who cares right?  Hopefully things turn around once some of these obscene contracts are shed but I'm not too hopeful.  Maybe I need to find a new team.. :megacrankey:

Garza's actually pitched really well. Tons of K's and bad luck.

You're right that was a bit unfair, he has deserved a couple wins.  I'm still not sure he was worth the price though since the team isn't likely to compete this year.
