what are they teaching kids these days

I wear this quarts around my neck.(inb4 hippy faggot). So my little brother comes home today and tells me "TAKE THAT OFF IT'LL GIVE YOU CANCER". I was like "where the fuck did you hear that kid", and he told me his teacher told him that. A 7th grade history teacher apparently told him that.
I knew the teacher from when i went to school, he's a knowitall retard, i think that teacher was bullied in school or something, seriously because it's his mission to be "cool" amongst the middle schoolers.
After a couple of google searches i found the myth was perpetuated by the fact that certain variations of quartz, after so many millinia turn different colours according to radiation and mineral deposits around them. One example would be quartz turning smoky, and even amethysts and many other gems develop this way.
Anyways, quartz and other gems can definitely give off radiation, but nothing significant enough to cause you bodily harm.
Anybody have any info on that subject, because i'd like to send my brother to school monday and have him call his teacher out for being a fear mongering faggot.

I've never heard of that, but that's pretty wild.
But don't you think any radiation, even claimed insignificant, may effect you more in the long term so you don't really notice it?
Maybe especially more since it's in direct contact with your skin?

There is radiation all around you. If you live at a high elevation or fly across the ocean many times a year, you probably absorb a small number of REMs or curis a year.
Small amounts of radiation is natural and insignificant.

That chart is really cool. Brings things into perspective for the laymen (me).

You misspelled 'know-it-all'.
Why do you live with your little brother? I do also, but that's because I'm a burnt-out lazy asshole. And before, I was a burnt-out lazy asshole with money and less self-respect.
My, the times do change.

Lol at first i thought you were telling me off like you knew my life history lolol.
I live with my brother because I'm barely 18, have no chance of going to college off someone else's money (aka broke as fuck, as is all my family, and i know it's sorry to say that kind of stuff, but i never liked school, i can't justify going to school and paying for it). Basically just a boat load of excuses that i could list but i won't because they are excuses.
I'm starting up a web development company and recently i've actually started considering getting my own office so i guess that's an accomplishment. I can't really drive though, and no buses run out here. So i have to wait a while, working from home.

In a person smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes per day, the radiation dose to the bronchial epithelium in areas of bifurcation is 8000 mrem per year -- the equivalent of the dose to the skin from 300 x-ray films of the chest per year. This figure is comparable to total-body exposure to natural background radiation containing 80 mrem per year in someone living in the Boston area.

Based on careful assessments of the concentrations of 210Po in the lung tissues, it was estimated that the "hot spots" received an annual dose of about 160 millisievert (about 16,000 millirem), two of the more common units for expressing doses from ionizing radiation. To provide perspective, it is useful to compare this dose to the limit stipulated, for example, by the US Environmental Protection Agency for members of the US public. Making this difficult in this case, however, is that the annual dose limit for members of the public (1 millisievert, or 100 millirem) is expressed in terms of a dose to the whole body, whereas, as noted above, the dose to a smoker is limited to a very small portion of the body.
