Building a hut somewhere in order to not pay rent

Good idea or bad idea? Like say I did this on like the outskirts of NYC and I biked into the city everyday, thereby being able to experience the city but not having to spend a dime on rent or gas.

I guess living in a van is a more practical alternative, but as far as hiding a hut, well there's this "jungle" on the side of a road going into my town that's like literaly a jungle and I imagine that a large portion is never visited.

I doubt you could get away with it near a city. Here is why:
1. People will probably see you coming and going. 2. If it is near a city, lots of cars will be on the road, further increasing the probability of #1 happening.
3. The land is probably not owned by the government.
If you want to build a hut to live on freely you are probably going to have to do it deep in some national forest. Deep enough in the woods that no one will accidentally stumble upon it.

i don't see how it would be any different from being a transient within the city. there are those that live behind dumpsters and shit. there are those that camp out in parks. i live in san francisco, and there is plenty of nature reserve outside of the city to live in. at least as long as the ranger doesn't catch up to you.

You'll undoubtedly get caught, and either get a shit storm of legal consequences, or the person will just trash your hut and beat the shit out of you.
I live in the country, and many people here keep an eye on their land (regardless of the quantity). I know I'd be extremely pissed off if I caught someone in my woods without permission.

If you belonged to a reserve close to a city you would be able to do it up in a heartbeat but your white, and your only goal in life is to not have to renounce money and to consume as much drugs as possible and no one likes dirty hippies so this musing of yours is fucked from the get go.

I am assuming the land is privately owned. Land owners seem to keep tabs on what is happening on their property a lot more than the government does. It is pretty obvious if someone moves on to your land if you only have 10-30 acres to keep track of.

Find a river and dig a hole behind a low bush or tree and put a hut there...

Bad idea, but close to a good idea. Check the laws in your state, but US federal forests and the state forests I know of have laws against camping in the same spot for a certain number of consecutive nights. In my state its somewhere in the ballpark of 2-3 weeks. So if you have a hut set up, eventually park rangers will figure it out and bust you.
However, make your camp portable and change locations within the time limit and you are in the clear. Also be sure to check into other laws about the forest you are planning on living in. For example, in my state, you can get fined for not burying your feces.

Oh yeah, and don't do this on private property or you will and should, imo, pay the consequences.

Wouldnt they also have laws against hunting wildlife or foraging in the forest? what do you plan on eating to sustain yourself with once your in there?
