Techno being so overplayed....
    #14330622 - 04/21/11 11:06 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I used to LOVE techno before it hit mainstream. I mean i still enjoy it when I'm high or intoxicated, but seriously people are taking this rave scene too seriously and jumping onto the bandwagon like flies on shit. What's your guys' views on it? Is it happening around your area too?

I think that ones interests should remain independent of popular trend, regardless of either the positive or negative influence.

Well, were you hip to in the late 1980's?  If you mean you used to love it before it hit mainstream, and that time period is anytime after the mid 1990's then you are just as guilty of what you complain of

QFT

Electronica didn't hit the mainstream till the late 90s. I remember being annoyed when it suddenly burst into popularity and MTV was making it all douchey.

It was a good thing for the artists who invented the genre, but it's become so watered down so fast it's actually kind of painful. Lot's of copycats trying to make money off the trend, and that's making it boring to listen to.

I still really dig the greats, Nigo, Technicolor, Daft Punk etc, and there are some newcomers that are really legit and quite good. Right now though, there is a lot of junk out there being hailed as "genius", when it's really pretty 'meh'.

This is what happens to every kind of music though. A group of people invent it as a local cultural phenomena, then it begins to gain popularity. Eventually it gets mass marketed, and everyone is trying to cash in on the aesthetic.

Yeah I pretty much agree with that if you mean electronica in general. So much pretty melodious technical wankery that gets called IDM these days. Having said that amon tobins latest is my favourite yet was pleased to see that. Gonjasufi is great recent stuff too.

Here's the first thing I found searching IDM on youtube, this is what 90% of idm sounds like these days IMO.

I think the people he's talking about is pretty obvious. Odds are, if you are on this web-forum, you live in an area where Electronica is part of the mainstream.

If you live in an area where the top 40 station plays Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, or even MGMT, you've been exposed to "techno" in the mainstream.

She is the #1 best selling Electronica artist according to Billboard. Her stuff is in tons of DJ sets. Which is why she is so popular.

I don't hear much "techno" in America... seems like its more of a European thing along with raves. Here in the states (at least where I'm from, Atlanta) dubstep has recently exploded. Now, I love candyflipping to a nice dubstep rave or show as much as the next guy, but a lot of it is just no talent hacks with a MIDI sampler and ProTools. That said, I'm not much of an electronic music fan in the first place. "Live music" shouldn't be some tool messing around on a laptop. That being said Bassnectar was one of the most fun shows I've ever been to...

Well idk what it is exactly I just threw out the first recording software I could think of because I'm not tech savy. But its just some dude messing around on a laptop, using beat matching, pitch correction, etc...

I don't really get this aversion to live electronica.  If it sounds good and gets me in the mood to move, I'm not going to hold back just because the sounds aren't coming from traditional instruments.

Live Daft Punk and Shpongle is pretty sick. Of course, they aren't just hitting play on their laptops either.

The aversion to "Live" Electronica is that much of it isn't actually live at all. It's pre-recorded music, being played over loud speakers while a dude on stage makes sure the laptop doesn't crash.

This references DJs more than anybody else, not that DJing isn't an art, but it's not the same kind of thing as playing a traditional instrument, or operating multiple synths and drum machines on the fly to create music in the moment.

:werd: ... very few electronic artists actually improv on the spot during the show though :smirk: Amon Tobin is one of the very few I've seen that really kicks ass at it.

It would be between Vsnares or Future sound of london that would have to be my favourite outta what I've seen. (Mind you the FSOL one was streamed from a studio.) Heard some Tobin sets but not been there for them they do sound kickass though.

The future is for sure electric. I think that it's a lot less digital then most people think however. Certain timbres can only be attained by manipulating specific instruments in careful ways.

Musique Concrete, which is the category that most Electronica falls under, is going to reach an commercial apex probably in the next 10 or 15 years, at which point, somebody will invent something different, possibly involving different instrumentation, and format.

What we've witnessed as a localized cultural phenom, is actually part of a larger artistic movement which has recently hit it's peak in popularity(Musique Concrete is about 70 years old). The people who today complain about the stagnant format of Electronica, are bound to be the pioneers and pioneering consumers of the next big thing.

This is a cultural cycle that we have been lucky enough to witness in our own lifetime. There are several major movements in Art that are about to come to a end, and only one of them is Electronica. Another pretty notable one is Rock. Both of these super-Genres are already obsolete to Artists and skilled listeners alike; It isn't that they are no longer appreciated, but that they are simply not novel any longer.

This is one of the most ignorant threads I've seen on the shroomery. Real electro music fans where are you?

Seriously you need to branch out, learn what real techno is (understand the differences between house, trance etc) and visit some decent clubs before you complain about techno being so overplayed... It just seems like you dont know what you're talking about?? :mushroom2:

I find it hard to beleive you listened to electronic music before it got big...  How old are you?  You listened to bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream? Or their influences before they got big? Ever heard of Wendy Carlos?

I dont mean to come off as a dick but a lot of the people posting in this thread seem like they went and read Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music.

Third i,this wasnt meant entirely for you.

And Grapefruit, a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread goes beyond opinion, and is false.

This is ironic, because neither of you have made legitimate arguments for your own subjective opinions. You've just repeated the mantra above, and declared others ignorant because they don't see eye to eye with you.

Secondly, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk were pioneers of Electronic music, but I wouldn't call them Electronica per se, more like Krautrock, and experimental Pop.

 How many times do I have to say I'm an avid Electronica listener? Sorry but not EVERYONE on Earth shares your personal aesthetic. Some of us have been listening to the various subgenres of Electronica since we were little kids. It's getting old now, we're ready to hear and create something different.

The exact same thing can be said for Rock music.

The reason I posted in this thread was not necessarily the opinion expressed by the OP or yourself that techno is overplayed.

Thats a simple statement and of course legitimate reasons and a decent argument can always be made to back up any point.

One of the reasons I posted is that it seems many who have posted here feel that techno is being overplayed due to the fact that in recent years a lot of chart music has had dance/electronic stylings.

What you need to realise is that techno has been around for over 20 years now, and other forms of electronica have been around for longer. Acid house exploded in the late 80's and believe it or not this had a very big effect on chart music and pop culture from the early 90's.

So for anyone saying that techno music is being overpayed please realise that its been around a lot longer than you think and has crossed over into the charts and the 'overground' or public psyche before and probably will do so again.

For all those who feel that 'raves' are a somewhat new phenomena and are annoyed to see people jump on the 'bandwagon' - you probably live in an area where it never really caught on... but bear in mind that there are people knocking around who have went to raves back in 88 and have grandkids now.

I dont want to sound like a prick here, but when I read so much written about 'techno' and see shpongle and daftpunk (dont get me wrong - I like em both) listed as masters it just seems like a few of you could with branching out.... a lot!

:peace:  :dj:

And as for techno being overplayed... I dare you to go to an event like timewarp - see the real masters at work whilst under the influence of some good pills and come back and tell me its being overplayed... because in essence its real appeal is timeless

Probably better vids around...

Secondly, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk were pioneers of Electronic music, but I wouldn't call them Electronica per se, more like Krautrock, and experimental Pop.

Pop music means popular...  You say things like Ke$ha and all that are electronica (yes they are)  but they are also pop...    Kraftwerk is electronica, in fact they are Electro, for the most part.

I agree with what you are saying about super genres like rock, electronica ect..  They need new life, but I wouldnt call them obsolete.

With music and especially electronica, a genre or sound gets popluar then sub-genres are made based on one particular sound. This keeps going and going untill you end up with diluted cheese that is all hooks and no substance. I think this is the biggest problem with electronica today. Having said that, there are new, fresh and exciting things happening in the world of electronica, more so recently than in a long time.

Obviously we are all passionate about electronic music. So

I love techno.  And by techno I don't mean electronic music, I mean TECHNO.

That being said, lately dubstep has come out in full force and it's sad because most dubstep that I've heard just plain SUCKS.

I think the reason dubstep is being popularized in America right now is because the electronic music genre itself has just become far too "cool" to ignore any longer by the mainstream.  Electro house mixes are popping up in a lot of pop hits on the radio, as well.  Both dubstep and electro house have really cool sounds, even if the composition of those sounds is an epic FAIL.

When trance music became popular around the world in the 90s, young people in America either loved it (explosion of the rave scene in California, for example) or loved to hate it (Darude - Sandstorm was the only techno song they ever heard), because it was so dramatically different from what they were used to hearing on the radio and MTV, and media-driven trends are very powerful here in America.
