BikeS !!! I need input.
    #14313121 - 04/18/11 04:16 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I need some help buying a new bicycle. Right now I have this schwin. Looks and feels like it's from the 80's. Heavy as fuck and timing out. Heavy ass rims and shot bearings. So I'm going to drop my next paycheck on a new bike since summer is almost here.

Please. Anyone. anyone who knows about bikes. guide me to my next ride.

I'm looking to spend around 400-500. Maybe more if something catches my eyes.

I was thinking about a Bianchi but they are a bit pricey. Hella nice though.

I need a street bicycle designed for distance. 12-18 speeds ya know ?

Something light and quality.

I don't really want a Fuji or Specialized (those are all I can find so far).

What are some other nice and cool brands for street bicycles ???

Nice but practical ya know ?

thanks!!!!!

I don't know much about bikes, but I own an Ironhorse.

I bought some rockshox dart 3 (?) to change up the front suspension. That may be a haggard set-up compared to some people, but I quite enjoy riding it around.

norco makes some decent entry level street bikes/hybrids, but i am not sure about their availability in the US.

Specialized is decent, for sure.

I would be used, on craigslist. Just make sure its got a decent drivetrain, breaks and wheels. For your pricerange you'll probably have to compromise on cockpit components.

Well you haven't really specified what type of bike you're looking for - do you want a road bike (skinny tires, high pressure, drop bars), or an XC style (with or w/o suspension, front or back, wider tires, less pressure), etc.

Be a little more specific and I'll be able to help you out.

I'll follow this with interest.

What do you want to use the bike for?

Most people here in holland get a not too fancy bike and uglify it to not get it stolen.

Very popular here are what we call Omafietsen (grandma bikes)

put bags on the back and you got yourself a great shopping bike thats very comfortable and isnt likely to get stolen.

But you want something flashy dont you? :yesnod:

I ride on all terrain equally so I prefer mountain bikes

They aren't ideal for roads, but I like having the ability to go from pavement to dirt/ gravel/ anything else if I need to.

For just dirt/gravel, I'll still take a road bike because they're SO much better on the road.

Anything more than dirt though and you need a mountain bike of some kind.

I've never actually rode a road bike before.

They're definitely a lot better, though. Going uphill on my mountain bike is way too much effort then I care to exert at those times. Maybe I should work out more. That might solve it.

It's a WORLD of difference.  Mainly because you're riding at >100 PSI and way skinnier tires.  On a nice road bike you can easily fly at 40km/h sustained for at least an hour or two with little effort - even on mine I can do 30km/h for about an hour and its a shitty fixie.

Im very much a fan of internal gearing.  I doubt I would ever go back to the traditional derailer.

Yeah I figured it was a huge difference.

If I ever get a chance to buy a road bike for cheap or try one out I will. The hill going up to my house is horrible for mountain biking up, so I usually walk mine up most of it.

i would say go used. $400-$500 goes a long way in the world of used bicycles. if you don't know anything about bicycles, it can be a daunting task trying to figure out what is up. first thing is, what do you want this bike for? you didn't say what kind of bike you wanted. if you give me your city and your height, i'll look up some bikes that would fit you on cl/ebay.

So heavy + so expensive - what advantages do you feel that it really offers?

Thing with road bikes is that they aren't cheap.  The cheapest road bike you can buy is ~$800, and they go up from there.  You can't really get a $200 road bike like you can for a mountain bike at Crappy Tire for example.

They are dope though - my fixie was like $150, but I built it out of scraps in the back of the shop I used to work at, and I wouldn't really consider it a full-on road bike as it doesn't have any of the expensive stuff (deraileurs, shifters, etc).

 that's a sickening deal - full 105 for $300?  I was talking about new, you can certainly snag some sweet deals on used bikes.

Might be time for a new seat on that bitch though

ya that seat looks silly. i bought it for like $130 just to make some money. i swear by used bike parts that are in good condition. they don't lose their value, sometimes you can profit, and they're usually immaculate.

It really depends on the bike - for a road bike I agree, but for anything else (XC, BMX, trials, etc) the bike takes a good amount of abuse, and I'm a little more skeptical.

I pretty much swear by buying used everything though, kijiji is my friend.

thats true mtb shit takes a beating. i have used cranks and brakes on my mtb, so far they've been holding strong but it's certainly not ideal.
