I would suggest (especially if on private property) you dig out a bunker and camouflage the entrance, although depending on your excavation/engineering expertise this may be impractical.

There's also the impracticality of running a full construction operation and never being discovered. Just pointing that out in case you know that thought never crossed your mind

Depending on how familiar you are with manual labor, it wouldn't be to difficult to excavate the bunker with a shovel. The dirt could easily be dispersed into the surrounding "jungle".
You could then shore it up with some plywood and 2x4's. You wouldn't run a greater risk of discovery than you would simply entering/exiting the site normally.

Where is this magical land that belongs to no one?
I mean illegally. A covert hut.

Yes. That is why most of us have advised him to not do it on private land. Those disturbances will happen whether or not he does construction. Living with 0 trace is impossible.
I was merely pointing out that constructing a "bunker" wouldn't necessarily be the reason for discovery if you went about it in the correct manner.

Sounds like this guy wants to still earn money and buy food from the city. But if someone wanted to live off the land for free and legally I bet its still possible. You could get licenses for bigger game every year during the appropriate seasons. I don't know all the laws, but a certain amount/type of foraging is probably legal. And hunting things like squirrel and rabbit is legal, I think. Of course you need the bigger game when you can get it or you will die from lack of fats. It doesn't sound like fun, but i'd be bummed if its really not possible to legally live wild in the US.

how do you plan to cook your rabbit? unless your at an actual camp site starting a fire will give u away and also most likely be illegal due to that asshole smokey the bear. An altho u could travel to a campsite id imagine it would be a pain, and get u caught eventually, plus people would be like hey whats up...wtf is that a..."insert wild animal"
I think the best bet instead of a hut would actually be sleeping in a tree, would take a little work but there's alot of perks to doing that, the number 1 reason unlike a hut its not going to stick out as much well until fall then your planking or w/e would be easily seen, the second reason it keeps you slightly more safe from wildlife, instead of waking up to your head inside of a bears mouth you'll wake up to your tree shaking which would actually be a really great way to kill one with limited resources as it takes away alot of a bears advantages, assuming you've planned for such an event

i'd ask this question on a different site (maybe somewhere like www.digihitch.com), you'll have a more informed user base to pull from.
squatting is what you're referring to and yes, it can and is done all over the world, everyday. it takes a thick skin and some smarts to pull it off successfully. cities are the best place to squat since most people are too busy leading their lives to notice or care about some random human in the woods.
but then there's the other side of it. you will come into contact with some strange, potentially violent and scary mother fuckers. especially in the NYC area.
be careful and do your research. and whatever you do, don't have drugs on you. you will eventually get harassed by the cops and the first thing they'll do is search you and all your shit.
--------------------
"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

well if he is following my plan, he is in a legal position to be cooking over a fire.
