nor was it the reason that the US tried to capture Osama and his merry pranksters in Afghanistan

As far as I'm aware the war didn't capture Osama or any of his merry pranksters. It was an abject failure in capturing any terrorists. As anyone with a basic knowledge of intelligence operations always knew it would be.

It did get rid of the Taliban government who just so happened to have rejected UNOCAL's plan for the oil pipeline. Coincidence? I think we can all make up our own minds.

I do hope you're joking. Afghanistan has been a non-issue in the media since we stopped bombing it.

In the British media, perhaps. I don't have a television or ready access to many English language magazines and newspapers, so I get virtually all my news from news sites on the web. I see articles about Afghanistan on a regular basis. What I haven't seen in any of those articles is any mention of progress on the proposed pipeline. It's dead in the water, and has been since 1998.

It did get rid of the Taliban government who just so happened to have rejected UNOCAL's plan for the oil pipeline. Coincidence? I think we can all make up our own minds.

Yes, the fact that there are dozens of companies anxious to bid on the pipeline contract (sarcasm) should make it fairly easy to make up one's mind.

There is almost nothing more vulnerable to terrorist attacks than a natural gas pipeline stretching hundreds of miles across a barren, mountainous, sparsely-populated terrain filled with violent fanatics with a penchant for blowing stuff up.

Not so sure about this one either pink. A group of arab terrorists crossing hundreds of miles of barren desert with no cover in land controlled by the nightmarish US backed Nothern Alliance warlords, facing certain agonising death if captured...that's not really what I'd call easy. In fact it's probably almost impossible unless you're James Bond.

And even if they did, so what if they blow up a section of pipeline? How long does it take to replace it? Compare fixing a pipeline every now and again to the billions in profit and you'll find most oil companies would take it in a heartbeat. Look at how Shell did the same thing in Nigeria - drive the Orgoni tribesmen off their land, bribe the government to hang everyone who opposes them. It's really not that difficult. The profit margin is still vastly in your favour.
