Found more LBMs
    #14328885 - 04/21/11 05:22 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Found in the northern half of Georgia (usa, not the country Georgia)

#1:

Habitat:
In a large pile of horse manure and wood chips / mulch

Gills: light brown

Stem:
about 3-4 inches, hollow, yellowish white

Cap:
bell-like, flipping upward at the rim, about an inch in diameter, light brown growing darker toward the center/top

Spore print color:
None yet

Bruising:
reddish brown

Other information:
Smells very mushroomish

#2

Habitat:
growing out of dead wood under dead leaves in a former animal enclosure

Gills: creamy white

Stem: About an inch long, white, hollow but firmer than #1

Cap: light brown with a darker nipple in the center

Spore print color:
None yet.

Bruising:
Tan

Will these mushrooms kill me? And also, do poisonous/fatal mushrooms still have hallucinogenic effects?

I don't know if they will kill you. Also, the answer to the question in bold is NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Seriously your question is batshit crazy to put it plainly. If you eat deadly mushrooms like Galerina, the only thing you'll be getting is organ failure ...

1. The color tone on this one sucks total ass, but it kind of looks like a Panaeolus for the habitat mentioned.

2. I'm thinking to be a Clitocybe or something similar

I'd guess Bolbitius sp. for the first one. Not sure, though.

If it wasn't found in the dung itself then maybe a Psathyrella?

Nah you're closer to the mark than I am. The gill color fits the specimen better for Bolbitius.

i apologize for the poor quality pictures. The first one, I don't think it's bolbitius after a google search. But I'm a complete noob. I'd take more pictures but I left them out of the fridge and they started to dry and look alot different now. D'oh!

I ate the younger of number 1 a couple of days ago after determining they weren't poisonous, and they had a definite effect. But the second one is from a different area and they have different gill color (white rather than brown).

edit: and the coloring of #1's cap is pretty much identical to #2.

now what kind of effect are you refering too!!?? Bolbitius is not a genus that contains active mushrooms. obviously you are either young as fuck or need to do some fucking homework before you mess with this shit man.

The effects I'm referring to are not negative. I'm old enough to take responsibility for my actions. If anything happens to me it's my fault. Relax.

That being said... I am not as hardcore about this as some of you. But I am very aware the risks involved here. I didn't just see the mushrooms and pop them into my mouth upon picking them, like an idiot. I made sure through extensive research that they were not going to harm me upon ingestion.

Even if it WERE Panaeolus eating one mushroom will not produce any psychedelic effect. Seriously, please don't eat mushrooms until given consent by a professional ...

Don't worry, I'm not going to eat these unless I know exactly what they are. Let me give some more info...

I found number 1 growing in a huge pile of horse manure mixed with bedding that was in the stables that the horses were pooing in. We use this as mulch. I found alot of very small mushrooms, pins of number 1 after a good rain 2 days ago. The spores seem to have traveled from the poo (which is at least a year old) to the wood chip bedding, which is what they were growing from (and it seems like a good substrate, as the poo to bedding ratio is almost equal). It rained last night and I found about 5-6 way more mature ones growing in the same location today. I also happened to find, in a different location, some smaller mushrooms growing in a different area, #2. These were growing through chicken wire under a layer of dead wood and dead leaves. These, I'm not so sure about, because they weren't growing in manure, but the area where I found them used to be a goat enclosure, which may have had other animals (like pigs) about 5 years ago.

I'm not finding these in some urban area, these are on a farm where animals have been pooing.

I recommend that you invest in a cheap digital camera that has at least a fair  :macrofunction:  macro function. And err ... for not wanting us to worry, you sure did say the wrong thing ... Saying you consumed a mushroom whose identity is unclear  is telling us you probably don't want to start hunting because you don't care about your well being.

#1 Could be a Bolbitius or a Psathyrella. A spore print would tell the difference.

At this point, I'd say you lack the experience to determine whether or not a mushroom is poisonous. Please refrain from eating unidentified mushrooms.

Another important thing is that we had about 7 inches of snow this winter. Lots of ice and water going into that mulch, going into the horse manure for long periods, while taking away some of the heat.

What other info would help you guys determine what these are?

Also, the ones I ate were very young. I definitely took a stupid, stupid risk there. I asked here and people replied "definitely Conocybe". I read that Filaris, the only deadly conocybe, doesn't grow in this area. And they had a definite magic mushroom effect. Stupid me, though.

Seriously, I love how concerned you all are. This place wouldn't be what it is without that level of "serious business". I definitely want to understand mushrooms better since they seem to grow on this property and I have access to them for free.

Young mushrooms can be just as toxic as mature ones, because when they grow, most of what is added is water mass.

Understandable. It's just something I don't want anyone dying miserably over. I'd rather be run through and trampled by a bull than consume amatoxins, I'd rather be beaten to death because amatoxins make some of the worst death experiences biologically possible.

EDIT: This too

Learn to take spore prints of your finds.

In my opinion, "definitely Conocybe" was an overzealous reply. Even so, Conocybe aren't typically eaten for any reason. Where's the spore print you promised in that post? Did you get one? What color was it?
