The biggest thing I hate about Christians is they always use the excuse of the "new covenant" where everything is different now and we don't have to sacrifice animals anymore to god.

:werd:

They want the bible to be the word of God, and the word of a omnipotent being is infalliable, but how the fuck can you take what you need and ignore the rest while still maintaining that you believe.

The Bible itself actually makes plenty of provisions for taking what you like and leaving what you don't.

People who think that the Bible can be used to justify fundamentalism and murder in the eyes of God either haven't read the damn thing or don't believe in God. A lot of them probably can't even read at all.

My dad believes the only right way to read the Bible is from a literal, fundamentalist perspective and he has his doctorate, I'm sure he has read the Bible a few times as well.

For some people eternal life in Heaven has to be a guarantee, or else they'd still be at the mercy of their own mortality, and therefor their religion would have failed to achieve it's main purpose.

I just don't understand why someone would be so afraid of death that they NEED eternal life...

Your dad is clearly at odds with the philosophy expounded by the founders of the Christian church.

I mean, he clearly thinks they were too liberal and that we need to go backwards from the social progressivism found at the heart of ancient Christian tradition. It's probably for no reason other than tradition, too, that he would use the Bible to explain his own philosophy.

Also, uber, right before you made your post, I made an edit to the post you quoted that might explain the situation of your dad.

No, he's an evangelical pastor. He heard "God's calling" when he was working as a bartender in a "din of iniquity."

He thinks that you and I are clearly at odds with the philosophy and message of Jesus and he could defend his position on that for hours, quoting the same verses that you would use to defend yours, arguing context just as you would, but from a different view.

Face it, otherwise normal and intelligent people regularly adopt fundamentalism, it's intimately tied to religion b/c religion is all about dodging the death bullet, and some people will do/think anything if they really believe it'll cheat death.

I guess it's hard to argue that religion is not abused in order to "dodge the death bullet" as you put it. However, I think we would do well to recognize this as a form of abuse, not as proper religion. Try to think of it as being similar to the difference between always having a glass of wine with dinner and binge-drinking for years.

IMO there is much more to religion than escaping the fear of death. It is the most ancient of literary traditions and a source of honest-to-God truth and meaning for many.

It's kind of hard for me to see from this perspective, because after a long career of tripping my balls off it's pretty hard for me to fear death itself. Also, my mother and father were atheistic and areligious, respectively, when I was younger. I fear the gradual failure of my body, but I know death itself is nothing to fear, even if I don't know what comes with it. I do think there's a better chance than not that it will actually be a release from the suffering with which I'm familiar.

I agree with you about fundamentalism being an abuse of religion, but I also think we'd do well to recognize that it's the most popular form of religion today (even though that is slowly changing).

I don't really know how to do this to be perfectly honest, being as how I come from such an areligious background. Religious people have always tried to convert me and I usually address their concerns directly and honestly explain that I'm not interested, and they usually listen to me and respect my wishes. I don't go in for dogma or for obsessive-compulsive spiritual habits. And so I've avoided every form of religion I've personally encountered. I'm an agnostic.

But I really do think we should all be trying to take religion back from the haters.

It's changing but will always be "The Book".  Though researching how it came to be and what was left out and included made me lose a lot of respect for it.
Still some wisdom in it, but how twisted those who have and want power and want to keep power control it.
