I try to avoid them also. But my fucking parents keep calling. I've been in a shitty mood and hung up on my dad when he started going into this big spill about how I don't go to church anymore...
I don't mind you being religious, just don't push that shit on me. It's obnoxious. I don't try to talk you into smoking pot so don't try to talk me into church.

I question their beliefs. Then point out the sheer cultism(is that even a word?).

That's pretty much how I act IF I have to deal with them.
Sometimes I do debate with them though.
But they usually plug their ears and go "LALALALALA"
And they're the ones that start it.

one came up to me yesterday we got into a little debate. i kicked his ass -- told him science flies you into moons religion flies you into buildings
also told him that maybe god was a lot more demonstrative back when he flamboyantly parted the sea but i've never seen him.
his arguments were have you ever seen random chance create order and what happens if 'im wrong'?
usually i try to avoid them but if i'm in a feisty mood i'll take the challenge and try to preach to the preacher

My dad and stepmom were making fun of the big bang and I tried to defend it (even though I'm a buddhist) and they asked "but where did it come from?" and I responded "where did your almighty and egotistical god come from?"
They didn't talk to me about it after that.

what really gets me frustrated is when people talk about either going to heaven or hell. it surprises the fuck out of me people actually believe that shit. ESPECIALLY if they are talking about burning for eternity in hell....oh their god....

i have been fascinated with religion for about 8 years now. i grew up church of christ and became a raging militant atheist into my mid twenties. i have a vastly different view of spirituality and religion than i did when i was younger and am seeking to pursue studying it formally and would like to begin cultivating a spiritual life of my own.
that being said, with a bit of reading you can beat the fundy tards at their own game. the best way to just end the discussion if it's one you're not wanting to have is to basically explain aquinas's model for faith, which is a theological cornerstone of the christian tradition. according to aquinas, the only way for two people to have any sort of philosophical debate is if they both have faith, which can only be granted by divine revelation (i.e. god). so if someone has faith and the other doesn't, witnessing to them is simply not going to work.
you could also study guys like dostoeyevski, marx and freud for pretty rock solid arguments for an atheistic world view. whatever you do, just don't resort to dawkins, hitchens or any of that group. it's stooping too low imo.

one time i was walkin around on campus tryin to grab some food real quick between classes and 2 dudes approached me, so of course i stopped to see what they wanted.
one of them was kinda chubby and was clearly the follower. the other was some average looking guy and he took the lead.
he comes up and says "hey, how are you?" and i respond "fine, whats up?" he asks if i want to come to the bible study he's hosting in a half an hour, to which i reply "nah, im not interested, thanks though"
i would have left it at that, nice and polite. but this guy wanted to prod and find out why. he asked if i was busy (i was) or if i had some other reason to not attend. i told him im an athiest (as that would be my primary reason for not attending) and have no desire to be religious. at this point im still trying to be nice and polite.
then the guy decides to waste more of my precious and expensive time by asking what reasoning i had for being an athiest.... which aside from being a fucking retarded question in the first place bothered me because i was clearly trying to leave this conversation and go grab some food between my classes so i replied "common sense".
the two people stood there with a dumbfounded look on their faces for like 3 seconds and then i said "later" and walked off because it got real awkward real quick.

I was out of a job once, and some straight up creationists offered me a job. Of course I took it, but I had to deal with their tardery for 6 months. They really, actually believed evolution was IM-FUCKING-POSSIBLE and that
was the "Truth". They had close ties to the "Creation Museum" in KY and kept trying to get me to go. I tried to explain that the only reference for this museum was the bible, and the bible was the very source for the information. They just looked at me like One combative older woman (who was my boss) basically forced me into a debate. At any juncture where I tried to make a point SHE JUST GOT LOUDER. And she never stopped talking, so I couldn't get a word in edgewise.
Afterword I asked her if she really thought that was an effective way to change people's minds (which she claimed was her purpose for forcing her views on people).
And she just looked at me like

I might actually be going to church this Sunday. I have christian beliefs, but haven't been to church in maybe 12 - 15 years. I only pray when bad things happen. Funny thing is, the pastor of this church just signed a 2 year lease renting this huge house a few miles from me (in NJ). I work frequently for the home owner, and this guy (pastor) invited me to his grand opening Easter service. His house will be needing plenty of work, and I can use the Maybe I should come as the Easter Bunny ... . . . . . .

Yeah this "argument" was often used on me as well. Yes, believe because YOU PHEEEER HIMMMM!!!!! Lol.
When I rebuked someone for going to the "what if you're wrong" corner, he came back a few days later with the same argument but said, "I mean, this isn't out of fear, just what if you're wrong?"
WTF!?!?!? Of course it is out of fear you fool, what else is there to that defence?

dude, it's fucking vinsue!
i'll chat it up with them. throw scriptures back at them just to confuse them (OMG SOMEONE'S WHO'S READ THE BIBLE! SHIT!).
i like to answer their rhetorical questions with outlandish answers: e.g. "Have you found Jesus?" "Yep, already have. Don't need any help with that." or stupid shit like "Well, I prayed, and God told me your religion was not the right one!"
