First Time Grow Log

This grow has been topsy turvy. 5 weeks ago 6 jars were inoculated. 4 took off with good colonization, 2 never produced any growth of any kind. Then, 2 weeks in I noticed green spots on two of the cubes. They were moved to a separate incubator in another room to avoid any further contamination. Unfortunately the contamination won in both jars and both were discarded in the dumpster out back! Down to two jars they both continued colonization. They were birthed 12 days ago, then dunked and rolled! They are in a mushbox mycodome bucket setup. On 4/18 there was pin development on one of the cakes.

4/19

4/20

4/21

Ok now I have a couple questions. This is first flush and I still have no pins on one of the disks. It has a slight orange tint on parts of the disk. Time to abort as to not risk further contamination? Second question. Obviously the other disk has taken off (the large one is just under 9inches), but there are two that popped up after the 3 large ones (the one on the far left and the other can be seen peeking over the top on the back left on 4/21) and I'm not ready to pick. Should I harvest the 3 larger ones and let the 2 smaller ones continue to grow before re-dunking? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry about the quality of the picks! When I find my camera cord I can get some better photos up!

Yeah, pick the ones that are ready and leave the others to grow. Long skinny stems generally mean lack of fresh air.....tiny caps generally mean lack of light...just for a pointer. Caps look ok, but more fresh air wouldnt hurt

That's exactly what they need. Unfortunately, I live in Denver and there is very little humidity! Short of humidifying the whole room, is there any way to allow for gas exchange without loss of humidity? Thanks for the feed back!
Also update: I attempted to move the "un-pinned" cake farther from the fruiting cake inside the chamber and noticed it was very soft to the touch? Thoughts?

Soft doesn't sound good or at least I have never had a soft one, but I'm not an expert. Keep a close eye on it and if anything else doesn't look, smell, or seem right, toss it. Just what I would do. Good Luck!!!

I think it might be time for the toss. Down to one cake ! I have 6 more cakes that were inoculated at the same time the cakes were birthed (almost 2 weeks). They are coming along very nicely.
Another first timer question. How can I tell if the cap has dropped it's spores?

Soft like squishy? Like you can stick your finger right in the cake?.....If so its bacteria, ide toss it. Dont be afraid to add more holes to your terrarium assuming you can. If I were you ide consider building a SGFC, shotgun fruiting chamber. They work perfect and you never have to worry about the humidity. Just mist and fan 3-5 times a day. Cheap to build too, you can do a small one for less than 20 bucks....

it will be obvious......Look at the 'stems' and you will see dark black/purple spots on them where the spores dropped, they can also drop to whatever the cakes are sitting on...This will happen after the veil breaks.

Study first on taking clean spore prints so you will be prepared (unless you use petri dishes and agar) Once the caps begins to open and flatten a bit pay close attention to it. The window of opportunity can be quite small for getting a perfect print, even though I hear they can drop spores for 48 hours. Some mushrooms are different than others. If you aren't using agar you need to be prepared and have sterile things ready so you cut the cap off with clean gloves and mask on...and transfer it straight to your medium (foil, wax paper, jar, jar with sterile water in it)....There are a few different teks on this

Thanks! I have read the teks and have greatly improved sanitary conditions since I first started (saw the power of contaminations early on)! I'm picking in the next 12 hours! Hopefully the others will be ready in the next 48 and then I will dunk and roll and re-fruit and hopefully have some nice second go round fruits!

Midnight harvest on 4/22. Just another ritual I have carried over from growing bud (along with 24/7 music, for these guys it was The String Cheese Incident day & night). The fruits came off clean with a nice firm snap with a twist a pull. The stems were much more dense than they originally appeared. Wet weight is 37.85 grams from the three of 5 harvested. The largest came in at 25.83 grams; just shy of a ounce. They are in the dry box now! I will update with pics of the two remaining fruits and possibly a report...
