From their wiki page... http://openfarmtech.org/wiki/Main_Page
Open Source Ecology is a network of farmers, engineers, and supporters that has been imagining and creating the Global Village Construction Set, an open source, low-cost, high performance technological platform. These DIY-fabricated industrial machines can be used to build a sustainable civilization with modern comforts. The GVCS lowers the barriers to entry into farming, building, and manufacturing. It is a life-size lego-like set of modular tools that can create entire economies.
This seems fairly sound to me. I like it, I like it a lot.

Sounds like a pretty genius idea. They also hit where it matters: It's cheaper.
It looks like it would be most useful in developing countries.

Just goes to show that if you have the willpower to do it, it can be done.
I would love to get my hands on some of those.

This isn't only for developing countries. The latest economic woes point out that even "developed" nations are not finished with their development. Indeed, it isn't the creative poor who will suffer most, they are used to dealing with adversity in a group fashion, THEY GROW THE FOOD THEY EAT. Presumably it's gonna be the developed nations who stand a chance for the worst of the suffering. If our food is grown in Mogadishu and shipped alllll the way to the US via fossil fuel, what happens to the food when the cost of fuel goes up? That's just one of many extremely challenging hurdles facing just about everyone alive. When crunch time comes, it would be handy to DIY, wouldn't it?
This is precisely the direction I have been going for a while without realizing it. The things which matter most, clean water, clean food, clean air and shelter, these are what I care most about, for yourselves and I both. I would love to see a new city sprout up right in the middle of the USA based solely upon these designs and their applications. The proof of concept is usually expensive due to reasearch costs. Once that's out of the way, it's available to anyone with tools.
This idea is great!

What they need to do is make prefab parts that can be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled in a different configuration with minimal use of tools/parts.
What it looks like is just some farmers with industrial tools creating industrial machines.
Still, a step in the right direction.
