im wondering the reason that the package was intercepted in the first place
its no big secret that lots of people ship and order drugs across the border
is it more or less a hit and miss kind of thing? if you get popped you are just one of the unlucky ones? perhaps this isn't the first KG they ordered from tanzania

FedEx is a big no-no from what I've always heard.. they can open whatever they want for whatever reason they have.

What dwtk said. Same with any courier service that's not USPS, as far as I understand. USPS requires an actual warrant (I think) as it's US mail. I used to know some people who worked at UPS and they were encouraged to open any and every package they deemed suspicious. I've heard similar of other places as well.

That is not true of UPS. I worked there for awhile and it's the exact opposite policy. Even if a box comes open during transport we are instructed not to mess with the package and it's contents but to simply re-tape the box and send it on it's way
As for customs seizing the package, they probably got suspicious when it was a package from Tanzania going to students in North Carolina on the UNC Campus. Especially 2 guys with American names. The package might have had an odor or triggered drug sniffing dogs as well.
I bet it was an RC as well though. Better than getting caught with a kilo of meth but im sure they will still get hit pretty damn hard under the analog act, unless the kids were smart enough to find one that isnt listed as an analog of a controlled substance.
Sucks either way.

Much of Africa is an illicit chemists paradise. All the necessary permits in some countries are only a few $50 bribes away.
If that was Meth it likely was on transit from Asia to the first world though. It probably was shipped in from Asia by container to the port of lets say Dar es Salaam.
A lot of dr00gz transit through Africa nowadays, transit mind you as many many people there live on $1 a day, its not much of a market.
If you think America is the land of possibilities..
*African cop finds big bag of white powder and points AK47 at hippie* COP: "HANDS OVER YOUR HEAD! DO NOT MOVE." *hippie complies, dropping a crisp US$ 50 bill" HIPPIE: "Oops." COP: "Let me get that for you. STAND STILL!" *cop picks it up and pockets one month's pay, then takes the baggie, tosses the powder on the ground and runs his boot through the sand* COP: "Carry on. Never again!" HIPPIE: "Good day officer!" COP: "Next time no more breaks. MOVE!"
Note that this is not how it works at borders and airports but inland, it can go down like that. If it doesnt, Jesus will weep for you, African prisons are made to make people who are often half starving even more uncomfortable.

Not in Arizona. Arizona has the most fucked up laws and penalties of almost any state. They would hit you with 10 years, first offense here for that much weight and all the charges they are facing. I hope those kids have some money banked and can afford a good lawyer. That's what it all comes down to. How much money you have.

I was commenting on the African situation. In the US, theres no worse place to be caught with a Kilo of anything as the USA.
Or do they pay cops in Arizona only $50 a month too?

Everything is way cheap, people are very friendly and you need a machete to get through the pot fields?

It is. If I ever make it big I think theres a good chance you can visit me there. Its one of the very few countries I can see myself living at.
Nothing illegal of course, you do NOT want to end up in jail there

If it was from across the border customs probably checked it out before hand. Its unsafe as hell to order stuff that illegal from outside the country - customs has opened almost half of my international shipments before they've reached me... the fuckers.
