doesn't get hot enough fast enough. you'd be better off boiling water in a regular pot.

The water in a crock-pot wouldn't get any hotter than 212F because it's not a pressurized vessel. If you're doing BRF, you're better off with a regular boil/steam bath a la PF Tek. If you're doing grain, the crock-pot is useless except for maybe doing fractional sterilization. In that case, you're still probably better off using a conventional boil/steam bath because the crock-pot takes a very long time to get up to temperature.
