Fruit or inoculate mroe substrate?
    #14324398 - 04/20/11 06:31 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Out of all my jars I have one quart jar of rye fully colonized. Should I use for a straw log or something or try use it as spawn for one of my grain bags? I don't have an impulse sealer.

Also do these jars look correct for a filter patch with tyvek?

You don't need an impulse sealer to use filter bags.  A good strong zip tie works great.  Hard to say what to do with someone else's spawn.  Spawning to more grain will yield a lot more spawn.  Unless it contaminates of course.  That's the only real risk.

What options do I have with one jar? Laundry basket would need more spawn. What could I use as a sleeve for a straw log? Would I need a FC or could I just put on perlite and mist daily?

You could do a 2 gallon straw bucket with 1 quart. But if I were you, I'd make more grain spawn with it using g2g and then use that to make more, bigger projects. Your jar lids look perfect. Don't forget to put foil over them when you PC.

I don't think i've ever even seen a 2 gal bucket. Or do you mean a 5 gal but partially filled? So what are some good steps for a g2g into spawn bags? How do you seal with a zip tie?

Do g2g and make more, this jar is the firs finished so it would be the best to replicate.  Be very clean however you want, glove box, flow hood, nice clean kitchen, and dump some grain(1/4cup) from the jar into the bag of sterilized grain and seal. Repeat for as many bags as you can.  Just twist the bag and zip tie it shut.

Lots of food products come in the smaller buckets, try a bakery or resterant for there empties.

Heavy duty trash bags will work for logs.

Have fun!!!

Well things don't always look as they are and things can be misread and mistaken for what they realy are so don't read too much into what I say since I might be mistaken myself. And remember I rarely ever give a definate answer.

Here is a grow I did with a 2 gallon: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10116779#10116779

Yeah when doing g2g just make sure you do your transfers in a glove box or using a flow hood. That way you can make sure you won't get any contams, or at least drastically lower the risk.

As far as getting 2 gallon buckets, they have them at Home Depot, but they are way over priced or you can get them from deli's or health food stores that would otherwise be throwing them out or recycling them.

I should have been more clear. Only one done not because it finished first, the only one that didn't succumb to bacterial contams.

If it was bacteria, you should probably also look into your grain spawn prep method before you spawn more, sounds like your jars may have been too wet.

Soak for about 18 hours boil for 10-15 untill I can crush a grain between my fingers then strain, load into jars and pc for 90 mins. Did I miss anything? I hope that wasn't the case because I just made some more grain and it was a little wetter than last time.

I tend to let the grain sit in the strainer and stir it for awhile and let some of the moisture steam off.  The grain shouldn't really feel wet when you load it into jars.  Not to say a little extra moisture will guarantee bacteria.  Just encourages it.
