Reagent grade lye?
    #14324579 - 04/20/11 07:14 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Is reagent grade lye safe to use in an extraction? Or could there be contaminants in it? It is from Flinn Scientific. It looks like a bunch of white pellets. It was kinda liquidy but im guessing thats just from absorbing water, it wasn't stored the best(not airtight). Thanks!

Is there no purity specification provided by the manufacturer?

I thought reagent grade was the highest purity you can get. If I'm not mistaken it goes like this:
Technical grade < laboratory grade < reagent grade.

Amp is correct. Here is a guide http://www.reagents.com/products/reagents/grades.html. Reagent is above USP.

My worry would be what came along with any water it sucked up while not sealed right. You say Lye so I'm guessing you mean sodium hydroxide (soap making friends say lye and sometimes mean potassium hydroxide). It would have pulled significant co2 (among other things) from the air as well. If it's quite wet it has significant contamination. Dry it in a very hot oven 500F or as high as the dial goes (gas ovens will not work as there is significant moisture created by the flame), in STEEL, it will eat glass like nobodies business at the heats needed to drive away moisture and reconstitute it to dryness. I use a kitchen scale with a towel on top (heat changes the load sensor in digital scales) I heat until the product stops loosing weight.

You can't use it it wet it's molar weight will be significantly changed 1ml of water weighs 1 gram etc.
