Getting people addicted/feeding addiction with a drug like crack is almost as good as murder. You take away people's existence. Have you seen areas with crack problems? Not pretty.

Not every person that tries crack becomes addicted. Matter of fact, most people who try crack do not become addicted. I've tried it and it felt great, but I felt no need to continue on with it. So you're saying the guy that sold crack to me is equated to a murderer? Does he belong in prison? Do I belong in prison for trying it?

A little speculation, but this is often how it goes:
1) Grows up in bad neighborhood with horrible parent(s). 2) School is poorly funded and the learning environment sucks badly- drops out. 3) Learns to sell drugs for a living and/or becomes addicted drugs. 4) First conviction. 5) Cannot get a job; doesn't know how to make ends meet. 6) Continues to sell drugs. 7) Gets convicted again.
wash, rinse, repeat.
They call it the "correctional system" but they're not correcting anything. They're punishing people for dealing with substances that should be legal and regulated.
More accurately should be called the punishment system.

All that money they're going to spend keeping him locked up for life would be better spent putting him through an intensive treatment program, as he's obviously addicted.

This is the problem with jails/prison. They punish but do not reform. Anyone stupid enough to sell crack near an elementary school is stupid enough to do it again. He needs an ass kicking, rehabilitation and job training. In that order. No need to torture him for the rest of his life. Pointless.

maybe this poor guy had no choice but to sell.
Could have been his only option were dealing or robbing, in which case he made the right decision (the ALMOST victimless crime)
Think about it, how many jobs are willing and waiting to hire someone with a drug offense, let alone 5 of them.

When crack is sold, there is no victim.
When crack is used, there is no victim.
If someone is neglecting their children, abusing their spouse, or ripping people off, there is a victim. These all occur with and without crack, alcohol, other drugs, etc. Substances are not victimizers.

this has nothing to do with karma dude.

it has everything to do with a system that is FUCKED and continues to try and make examples out of people, even though over and over and over it's proven that incarcerating non-violent drug offenders is a useless waste of our money. seriously it's going to cost 60,000K a year to keep this dude in prison for the rest of his LIFE.
this shit makes me sick and is why I have become a drug policy reform activist. if you agree with me then please check out the links in my sig.

I look at drugs as drugs and all of problems associated with them are a direct result of their prohibition. Also there is a tremendous amount of bias for/against one drug or another even among, surprisingly, drug users based on whether they like or prefer a particular drug.
I agree with yogabunny "if he were white the headline of this news story would be quite different". Also if the drug in the headline was pot instead of crack, generally people would feel differently as well. Actually if you replace the headline with any drug people will react differently. People are prejudiced sadly against one's skin color and well as one's drug of choice. The whole concept of 'my drug is better than yours' is a major factor that is delaying any type of drug reform. It is just a matter of perception.
I usually will mentally replace one drug with another in a story. Even on a TV show or a movie when people are having a cocktail or two I replace that with a joint or a line of blow. There really is no difference in my mind. It still comes down to our willingness as a culture to punish or ostracize people for doing things differently than we do ourselves, regardless of what that is, even if the only 'victim' is themselves. That is what needs to change.

+1!
On this website and even with some of my fellow drug reformers, there is a sentiment of indifference towards people who are busted for drugs that are not cannabis or psychedelics.
To these folks, it's a horrific violation against the laws of the universe when someone's busted for pot or LSD. But when someone's incarcerated over Heroin, crack or meth, the attitude is "well, that's what they get for dealing with bad drugs."
Nails on the chalkboard to someone legitimately concerned with personal freedom and ending drug prohibition.

yes.
i couldn't agree with you more. 100% agree with everything you said here.
the media and powers that be do a great job of "divide and conquer" among our community which perpetuates fear based thoughts and actions that keep us separated. by judging a crack head or a junkie we make sure that everyone knows that we are nothing like them. it's all the same shit, everyone just wants to get high.

In the end it comes down to the fact that any drug CAN be used responsibly. Not everyone who uses opiates, cocaine or benzos becomes addicted.
Declaring any drug illegal makes "responsible use" nearly impossible and adds an increased level of danger by negating quality control and related concerns.
