$10 Crack Sale Earns Man Life In Prison April 20, 2011 - wyff4.com
A 28-year-old Cherokee County man who sold $10 worth of crack to an undercover informant was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday under the state’s repeat offender law.
James R. Byers Jr. was found guilty of third offense distribution of crack cocaine and distribution of crack cocaine within a half mile of a school or park during a trial at the Cherokee County Courthouse.
Byers’ prior criminal record included five drug convictions.
“James Byers will spend the balance of his life behind bars because he failed to stop selling drugs,” Assistant Solicitor Kim Leskanic said.
Prosecutors said Byers’ sold the crack to the informant on Aug. 26, 2009 near Mary Bramlett Elementary School.
Cherokee County sheriff’s deputies videotaped the transaction between Byers and the informant.
Byers has been in prison since Oct. 1, 2009.

wow. is this a joke? Lets go ahead and sentence all fast food employees while were at it. Also all cigarette vendors. Both alone, meaning fast food or cigarettes are responsible for more people's health problems and deaths than anything.
fucking ridiculous

So I wonder what exactly is a life sentence anymore? Is it possible that the judiciary will follow through with their threat?

I'd hate to have that kind of karma on my...self? Whatever noun you want to use, that's a lot of bad karma.
This is in reference to those who support this kind of behavior and work in the system that proliferates it.

I don't wonder if there's justice in the Universe. We can infer the truth through observance.

What's your opinion on the matter? Is there justice in the Universe? If I had to say yes or no I'd say yes, but it's not 1 for 1. It happens in a very "ripple in the pond" sort of way and it's very difficult to predict when and how things will happen as a result of other things having happened.
But I do think that energy and situations tend to come around and go around more frequently than they should. The best way I can put it is that wayyyy too many "coincidences" occur for this to be a pure realm of chaos.

I guess I cannot fully develop a classic opinion as to whether or not the quality "justice" is ubiquitous in our realm of existence or not. If I had to put it in writing I would guess that there is not, as where is justice in nature? A few examples would be when the hyena feasts upon the flesh of a lamb, by human standards there can be no justice in this situation. When the tornado rips apart the grandmothers home and leaves the mafioso's palace alone, no justice here. In these immediate examples there is no justice, that is to say we are forced to judge from a limited frame of experience consisting, perhaps, of only 20 - 40 years, nothing compared to the gross total of existence ( which in my personal opinion cannot be counted as 1x years, but must look more like x years per every entity capable of existing = a mammoth number of years.) Finally, if justice is a human conception, which can so far be assumed, there can only be justice where we place it.
This man could be in the process of being victimized by justice. Who knows?

I guess I would have to agree on this, simple as it is. It could have been an easy choice for the guy.

Well, he was punished by the law 5 times, he DID have ample warning I'm sure. You are right, they chose to buy. But you're missing the fact that there is a mob of uniforms who back up the law here. He knew that, so did they. Victim-less or not, which I doubt, he had a looooooooooooong warning against what he was doing. A man should chose what he is GOOD at instead of what he is NOT GOOD at as his life's occupation, hence, I don't prostitute. I suck at that

Your right in what you say.
My point is beyond this though. Im not going against just a point.
Im going against an entire belief that this system is right and that these drugs should be illegal. This is not just a point. This is WAYYYY bigger than that

Prohibition of all drugs will be lifted eventually. 'Crimes' like this won't be considered crimes at all. It will be viewed as absurd to arrest individuals who are doing no harm to others. Maybe we'll all live to see this happen, maybe we won't. The only thing that is certain is that prohibition will not be in place much longer, in the grand scheme of things.

While I can't say that crack dealers generally occupy a fuzzy place in my heart, this is kind of sad. 28 years old and a good chance of never seeing the outs again. What a waste. Same with the taxpayer money. Assume he lives to 75. 47 years in the clink, at $20000/yr (conservativley) is damn near $1 million bucks. Money that could probably be better spent elsewhere, but that is a judgment call.

That's disgusting. We don't like him so we're throwing him in a cage for his whole life? I feel a little nauseous.

This is no surprise to me. Seems like the perpetuation of what we are all guilty of, social precipitation; the coalescence of peoples into interest groups of similar nature, discluding those not sharing compatible beliefs. This is perfectly natural really, only it's highly visible when it's in the news... and running our lives.
