Funny smell in my jar

So I bought my spores from sporeworks and I did all the required steps for the tek, it's been 10 days and no signs of myc growth in my jars. I decide to open up one of them and there is this distinct smell that smells like wine, I'm not sure how to describe it really. It smells kind of like fermentation. Is this the culprit for the no growth of myc?
PS: I am reusing the jars from a previous grow if this has anything to do with it. I was under the impression that if I let them cook for 90 minutes, they'll be sterile.

I've also cleaned my jars with rubbing alcohol prior to putting in the verm and I might now have let them dry up too well. Can this be the problem as well?
What should I do with my jars now if I want to reuse them?

I'm not an expert, but from what I have read, a bad smell is grounds for tossing. If you know the smell of shrooms and it doesn't smell like that then toss it before it contams your grow room.

If it is a contam, it might not be from the jars. Could be from any number of items you used. Clean everything and try again.

But what could it be? How should I clean the jars? Can the verm get contaminated or the brown rice flour? verm is sitting in my closet and the brown rice flour is in my pantry. Could it be contamination from the water?

Did not use PC, I used a pot and boiled it for 90 minutes.

Fermentation smell? BRF Saki! I'd give them another week, if still no sign of myc, you may want to dump 'em. Good luck!

I would think that 90 min. would do the trick, look elsewhere, like your GB or your filters. It could have come from your syringe. It has happened. Are you following RR & Roadkills Tek? Because that should all be in the jars befor processing. The only thing that wouldn't be in the jars is your syringe & GB. Did you flame your needle? Just trying to give you ideas as to where to look for contams.

Already dumped them all. Every single jar reeked of fermentation. (the kind of smell that you smell if you leave a beer out for a long period of time. I think the culprit is that after I rinsed the jars to put the substrate in, I soaked them with rubbing alochol and did not wait enough time for it to dry. I dried them off, but I still smelled the alcohol in the jars and STILL put the substrate in.
Oh well you live and you learn

They should smell a sweet mushroom smell. I agree bad smells are pretty indicative. Check your inoculation procedure.

Your failure was "boiling" the jars. You should PC them or use a proper sterilization tek. That was bacteria causing fermentation that you smelled.

afrosheen just wondering your opion. You don't think that 90 min boil would kill all bacteria as well as alcohol. I was thinking that maybe the alcohol might have something to do with it. I haven't had the problem as I PC, but I really thought that 90 min boil would cure all?

The alcohol itself wouldn't cause contamination. It's job is to kill microbes
