i got an E73 error message today on my xbox that i've had for over four years. i think i got a pretty good run as others i know have had many problems with theirs and much worse problems. i'm looking at xbox forums now too see if i can fix it myself or if i need to get someone who knows something about electronics to fix it.

you need professional help. having it reballed is the only real fix, anything else will fail and possible damage it further. there is a guy greg the boxxdr in canada, google around for him, he is the guy to send it to.

i have read about all the quick fixes, but most people i know that have them done end up having it break within the next few months anyway. depending on the price to fix it, it may be better to just look into one of the newer ones.
i guess i have been lucky. the only problem i ever had was my dvd drive quit working after 1 year and 9 days. talk about PISSED. finally i just got pissed and sent it in saying it had RRoD and they sent me a perfectly good working console. im sorry, but i wasnt paying 130 bucks to have something fixed that broke 9 days after warranty

my best advise for you is to see if you can find a used or refurbed jasper model, they sell for ~100 at gamestop etc (console, all cables and controller) and you might find one used for less, just make sure it is a jasper, u can tell by the plug in in the back of the console. notice the split tab above the power leads.

Same mine lasted for about the same amount of time and crapped out although it did get the red ring of death thing but i fixed it by gluing pennies on these black things inside the xbox... then it eventually got the E74 error thing and i said fudge it and bought a new xbox slim...
Also instead of just throwing it out, put it on kijiji or ebay for 20 bucks and people are happy to take it off your hands

I bought my xbox 360 around 3 or 4 years ago, it has never red ringed and is still working perfectly. I do have it sitting on a unit that gives it good ventilation though, so that might have something to do with it.

i wonder. it used to be on a desk getting all the ventilation it could. i put it in a semi enclosed cabinet about 3 months ago.

no, your problem is the result of tin based solder binding the gpu to the mobo as opposed to lead based solder. while ventilation is important, it is not the cause of your problems.

you know you can reball it yourself, but if you haven't done it before at least one time i wouldn't recommend it. they had a whole thread on this in the science and technology forum.
apparently someone made a tech to this online, and was telling everyone to overheat the gpu. it was totally bunk apparently.
i know for sure there are more ways it can break than just the cpu. i guess that is like 85% of all the issues, but make sure you look up the error message in case it's something else.
i have no problem with paying to get mine fixed if/when it does eventually break. i just wish there was a store i could bring it to without having it expedited.

where do you figure that unproper ventilation won't cause this? it's an overheating issue that does what you are describing, or it'd just happen by itself without you turning it on.
ventilation is very important. with a 360, you'll notice that the plug charger gets very hot, and not the console itself. while this is true, it is because of a big fan and very proper ventilation. if you leave your 360 on all day it'll start to get hot.
i've heard ps3 doesn't really have this problem. but ehh... i went with a 360. w/e

honestly man i think quality control on xbox production is a little fucked...
because ive seen xbox's red ring after less than a year, and some last 3+ years.
but one thing i realized is that they all break...sometime sooner than youd want it too. I would be surpirsed to find somebody who actually games and still has a 360 from around 05'....they just don't last idk..

ps3 suffers the same hardware failure on its older units. once again, this is not a ventalation, quality control, board warping or any other theory people like to concoct, these hardware failures are a result of cracked solder joints under the gpu which are a result of using brittle tin based solder instead of lead based solder. there is no home reballing or reflowing, both require hundreds, even thousands of dollars of equipment and reballing takes lots of practice before a tech can actually do it right. 99% of non disk drive harware failures w/ the 360 are gpu solder failures.
hope i answered all misinformation and myths for yall. this isn't knowledge i got from reading stupid shit on the net, i actually ran a console repair shop for a while.

E73: I/O Hardware Error - Couldn't calibrate HSIO Bus from edram: this error is likely caused by a problem with the Ethernet port or supporting control devices
Doesnt sound like a solder/xclamp error. Those display a red ring error for General Hardware Failure and xclamps can be fixed with $6 of hardware from Home Depot. Not hard at all.
I did this repair for both me and my brother over a year ago and theyre still running strong.
But iateshaggy sounds like he has more experience. Just adding my 2c.

if you "fixed" it by replacing the xclamp with screws, then your problem was cracked bga under the gpu and your "fix" is only setting you up for a much worse unrepairable hardware failure in the future when the fractured bga breaks and i really don't believe it has lasted for a year as these screw based "fixes" usually only last a day or two at best. like i said, this is what i have found with my own two eyes actually running a repair shop.

My girlfriend bought me a refurbished 360 from gamestop for my birthday. Went to play it for the first time and it had red ring. Tried to return it but they refused without the receipt that we couldnt find. She was upset at herself so I figured i would try to fix it myself. Opened it up and remember there being space between the heatsink and the chip? Also the paste on chip was crusty. Was a while ago, memory is fuzzy, dont really recall exactly the picture of the situation but im sure you have some idea of what im describing. Went online, found some guide that seemed would work and replaced clamp with screws and its been working since. Its been over a year. Did the same thing to my brothers 360 that had the same red ring error although it didnt appear to have been in the same state as mine as far as space above the chip.
Like I said, thats all the experience ive had, might have been a stroke of luck, but whether you believe me or not, theyve both been working since. Mine since 3/2/2010 and my brothers for around 10 months. Wouldnt bother with describing the problem to someone whos more knowledgeable then me, at the risk of sounding stupid if it wasnt what really happened.

oh i wouldnt doubt it, ive fixed 2 of mine similarly...which is why i feel as though quality control in the manufacturing phase of these things is beaaaat.
edit- just read the post about tin based soder compared to lead, even if this is true, thats no excuse! why would you fuck up something so miniscule as the type of soder on a 300$ unit?
sorry microsoft...no excuse! thats not acceptable!
andyou would think they would realize this problem and fix it..

thats cool man, i don't doubt what you say..
but you cant tell me that (in your console repair shop) you see as many broken ps3's as you do xbox's...
i mean im sure ps3's run into issues and break too...but of the people i know ive never witnessed a broken ps3, but many many fucked 360's..
maybe its just me
