75 success on straw with my new humidibucket and GH!
    #14316452 - 04/19/11 10:19 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Pure straw block.
Pasteurized @ 1hour.
1 quart rye / 75
left for 3 months to brown.
Space is a covered porch area gets natural air currents.
Natural light and temps used.
Fan FAE on 24/7
Fogger on half hour on/half hour off.
Doors left open most of time.

Do you think they are ready to pick now?

will report back with weights and BE if i can find the notes.

:vaped:

Fractal.

I thought shiitake wouldn't grow on straw?  Those look like sizable yields, certainly considering that it's straw you're using.

This gives me new hope.  I'm going to be attempting some more varied projects.

Was the straw block held together in a filtered, or unfiltered bag?  I imagine it's just like oysters only after full colonization you have to wait for 3 months for the whole thing to turn brown right?

Edit: One thing I can't figure out is moisture; if you leave the block sitting for 3 months doesn't it go dry?  Do you dunk prior to fruiting to initiate pinning?

They look about ready to pick.  If you let shiitake flatten out, they get soggy and fall apart when cooked.  You want to harvest when the edges are still curled under.

Nice grow. I've been mixing straw into conifer sawdust at about a 20% or so ratio and it really helps pinning performance.

the bag was a standard clear plastic bag, i used an old syringe tube stuffed with polyfil and taped over with micropore tape as my filter, ziptied to top of the bag.

No dunk, straight outta bag,, well rinsed, and slapped about a bit before put into fruiting.

I may well give him a dunk, after i pick these fruits this morning. Hopin for at least another good flush before chucking him.

I wouldn't dunk for over an hour or it will get totally saturated.

damm it, read that too late. getting him out now!

had about 3 hours, looks ok tho still in one piece.

The straw was originally 1kg dry. So my 1st flush sets my BE at 25% yes?

Maybe with another good flush I'll get it up to 50% BE, not bad for no supplements I suppose.

Got some sawdust and straw blocks nearly ready to go too

What was the pH of the water you hydrated/dunked with?  In my experience straw can be near neutral, water is near neutral, but shiitake likes a pH of around 5.  I use vinegar to lower the pH of my well water in every batch of substrate.  This alone can double the BE.  Try it next time.

Another big pinning trigger with shiitake is a fluctuating humidity.  You might adjust your timer to raise the humidity for an hour or two, and then let it drop to 70% or so before bringing it back up again.

Wow, I had no idea about adjusting the water's pH with vinegar. Doubling the BE is significant. So thanks for the tip. I've saved it in my doc of Shiitake notes gleaned from this forum. I'll certainly experiment with it next time I grow some.
