"I'm not going to struggle physically against any restraints. I'm not going to shout, use profanity or make idle threats. Understand though that I'm not only upset, but I'm saddened by what is happening here tonight. I'm not only saddened, but disappointed that a system that is supposed to protect and uphold what is just and right can be so much like me when I made the same shameful mistake."
- Napolean Beazley, executed May 28, 2002

"They call me a coldblooded killer when I shot a man that shot me first. The only thing that convicted me was that I am a Mexican and that he was a police officer. People hollered for my life, and they are to have my life tonight... This is your equal justice, This is America's equal justice. A Mexican's life is worth nothing."
- Henry Potter, executed July 9, 1985

"I'm definitely not the person now that I was then. I was sick, afraid, and looking for love in all the wrong ways. I've caused you pain and grief beyond ever dreaming to cause someone of. I hope you will be able to forgive me. To my mother, I love you very much."
- Cornelius Goss, executed Feb 23, 2000

"I deserve this. Tell everyone I said goodbye."
- Charles Bass, executed April 12, 1986

"To all of the racist white folks in America that hate black folks and to all of the black folks in America that hate themselves: the infamous words of my famous legendary brother, Matt Turner, "Y'all kiss my black ass." Let's do it."
- Brian Roberson, executed Aug 9, 2000

"You all brought me here to be executed, not a make a speech. That's it."
- Charlie Livingston, executed Nov 21, 1997

I'll answer with a simple question.

How can the State take away what it cannot give?

Well they seem to do it a lot. Doesn't seem very challenging.

Has anybody seen "Mr. Death", the film about that weird guy who designs execution equipment for the US penal system and testified as an expert in court about the gas chambers in Nazi germany? What a great documentary.

Anyway, I think the state seems to have convinced us it has the right to do whatever it wants, as long as the people are either willing or stupid enough to let them. I think that question/answer's a little TOO simple. What moral absolutes can we ground our condemnation of the death penalty in? Last time I checked we hadn't even decided for sure if there WERE any.

The way I see it, out of the hundred of executions, if just one man was put to death unjustly, then the whole system is flawed.

Lift the ban on human clone research and they might be able to give it before too long.

If it were up to the parents to throw the switch would it then be just?If they refuse then the prisoner gets life.

Or if it is "God" who is the only giver is it "God" that takes it away working through man?

That first quote says it, whatever the man did, his words stand apart.

well it actually is god, who gives life... more than tha, it is god who IS life itself... the parents are god too when they experience unity and conceive a child... but i dont think parents could have the right or the wisdom to decide over the end of a life, even if its the life of their own child... the godly part of oneself (the soul) has to decide when to leave the body, when the experience on earth is finished... thus, it is god who decides...

i totally agree with you... watch "The Life of David Gale"... its an astonishing movie about death sentence... and it covers exactly what you said in that post...
