ID request please - I think they are prob inactive?

Habitat:
Found it in our front yard under a dead tree with lots of bark.

Gills:
Brown/white, when touched brown stuff comes off.

Stem:
White, fragile.

Cap:
Light brown to brown

Spore print color:
Brown

Bruising:
No bruising.

Location:
S/east VIC

looks like gymnopilus spectabilis... but if you are sure it is brown, it cant be... anyone else want to help with this one? and do you have any more pics?

and was it growing directly out of the wood?

To get the spore color accurately, make a spore print on white paper, and be sure to do it long enough to get a good, thick deposit of spore powder. Overnight is usually pretty good.

If the spore print color is orange, then it's a Gymnopilus, as other have stated above. If it comes out definitely brown, then your specimen is a Pholiota. Having said that, it looks more like a typical Gymnopilus than a Pholiota.

Gymnopilus junonius by the looks of it.

Strangely, I've seen these pop out of lawns.

i found a mushroom like that but it was sooo huge, 20cm wide the cap was :o

holy shit!
these things are popping up everywhere.
gym's are making my head hurt.
my guess is that they are active junonius based on the orange, red veil and reddish tones on the cap.

take a spore print over night to make sure it is rusty orange (just to be on the safe side).

however, my assumption is that you are good to go.
