The melt value of a 10 cent piece is almost 3 and a quarter bucks.  Even the numismatic value of a coin over 50 years old isn't as great as the melt value, in most cases.

What is money really worth?

Considering silver is worth $44.24 per oz right now,
and a silver dime weighs .07234 oz, then you would need about 14 dimes for an oz.
That is a dollar forty in money, with a melt value of a little over forty bucks.

*edit: price mistake.

:tinfoil:

GMail just gave me an ad for "Rare Silver Coins".
That's not the tinfoil hat part, I'm used to Google being creepy.
But what if the original link is some kind of googlebombing scheme, with us as the suckers who clicked through to their website?

and all pennies dated  pre-1982 are worth more in copper than face value.  they changed composition of metals in 1982 so half '82s are less than copper than others

Silver dimes, yea of course.  Silver coins are hard to come by, but it is legal to melt and sell them.  It is not legal to sell and melt copper pennies, not that legality really matters.

I have about $500 worth of coins. If I were to sell them I might get around $10,000 depending on the buyers. Melting down a coin is stupid since it is layered with different materials.
