rye seed substitutes

I live in toronto and have tried the suggestions of zellers, wal-mart, canadian tire, health food stores, etc. to find rye seed. I'm at my wits end, and was wondering. Is there a substitute to rye seeds that would be easyier to find, and if possible it would be nice if anyone knew where to get them. I know the tek for using rye seed, so it would be best if there was little or no differents between the tek I'll have to use with the substitute you might suggest. I'm completly ready to start my first (non- rice cake) batch but I can't find a substrate to colonize with. just some extra info- It's being grown indores, so nothing stinky like manure and its gonna be a VERY large batch (approx 50-100 jars)

Rye berries are the cream of the crop and beat every other grain, hands down. The organic rye berries I get are grown in Ontario, so shouldn't be hard to find. Check organic food stores or animal feed stores. RR

Must be something they export, Iv had NO luck finding rye berries at over 8 different feed mills within 2 hours of myself.
Wheat kernels where all I could find, $27 for a 55Lb bag. They are working out great for all my edible and medicinal grows, and can be prepped the same as rye.

Evil search for whole foods in your area.. They can get your 25lb. bags of rye if you wanted to go that route.. I go to my local whole foods, well it aint local its like an hr away and I buy 200lbs. at a time.. Last time the cashier was like "what do you and your wife do with all that rye" I told her we make homemade bread with it Not sure if you actually can but it worked lmao..

Scarborough is part of Toronto isn't it? They're calling it Rye Kernels. RR

Take note folks from T., there is a whole foods in Toronto as well as Oakville Ontario.
These are too far out of my way to be viable options, and I highly doubt I could get rye cheaper then the 55lb for $27 I am getting now.
Thanks for the information tho Damion, I am sure it will help a lot of folks.

No worries, I just know that alot of people check health food stores, but most of the smaller ones don't carry rye, but the bigger ones like whole foods does, I think I paid 68 cents/lb.

GREAT link RR, many thanks, and yes Scarborough is part of the Greater Toronto Area.
D: I am currently paying .49 cents per lb for hard wheat kernels, I think for that price I will stick to them.
If I come across some rye at a competitive price I might give it a try, but with gas at 1.32/L the store will have to be a lot closer.

I purchase my hard wheat from a small feed mill. Check google for feed mills in your area and give a few a call. Most can get hard wheat, different types of bran etc.
As for the address for the oakville/toronto whole foods:

The bulk barn is a good easy place to get wheat kernels fast for your first try, but past that you would be better off to find a feed mill.
Grow Supplies In Canada Thread: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13314653/fpart/1
* Bulk Barn variety of "Wheat Berries", aka "Wheat Kernels" -item #1544 at your local Bulk Barn
Hard Wheat Kernels - $2.40 / KG $1.09 / LB 25KG bag = $60 + 10% off for buying sealed bag = $54
I can get the same 25KG for $27 CDN no tax at the feed mill which works out to roughly .49 cents per lb.

Gosh, the other side of town. I'm leaving at 3 A.M. to drive to Seattle and back tomorrow for supplies. That's a 750 mile round trip. Not that I'd trade my cabin and farm in the wilderness for any other place on Earth, but it's just funny to hear people talking about having to drive 'clear across town' for grains, when the nearest town big enough to even have a traffic signal is a three hour drive from here, with a population of 'only' 5,000.
In the 100 square miles around our cabin, there's only 9 people, and that includes the Mrs and I. RR

I would trade it all in for a piece of land like yours RR. I have some family that own a boat in cottage on a secluded lake and I must say being up in the deep woods hours away from civilization is a feeling I enjoy. One day I hope to own my own property away from the cities.
Just out of curiosity what are you pay for gas out your way these days?

About $1.10/liter, but I have to get it at the last 'town' I pass through, 40 miles away. That's the nearest gas station. RR

It is around $1.32/L here at the moment in Ontario, sometimes higher sometimes lower. In my old car it would cost me $25-30 just to get to a whole foods store yet alone buy the actual grain.
I bet with the closest gas station being 40 miles from home, and a round trip into town being 750 miles planning ahead is key lol.
